Angel Aldan Demapan (born May 27,1982 in Saipan,Northern Mariana Islands) is a Northern Mariana Islands politician affiliated with the Republican Party. [1]
Demapan was born on Saipan,Northern Mariana Islands,on May 27,1982,to Juan Deleon Guerrero Demapan and Rosario Benavente Aldan. His father died from a stroke when he was 11-years old,while his mother suffered paralysis from a stroke a few years later. He received an Associate in Applied Science degree in business administration from Northern Marianas College and studied communications at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. [2]
Demapan served in the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives during the 19th and 20th Commonwealth Legislatures. [3]
On October 4,2017,Demapan announced his candidacy for Delegate to the United States House of Representatives in the November 2018 election. [4] He faced incumbent Delegate Gregorio "Killi" Sablan,an independent,in the forthcoming election on November 13,2018,who won reelection by a wide margin. [5] [6] Between his loss in the 2018 election and his election to the CNMI House in 2020,he was chief of staff to Governor Ralph Torres. [7]
In the 2020 general election,he was elected to the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives. In August 2021,after the passing of Minority Leader Ivan Blanco,Demapan was elected House Minority Leader by his fellow Republicans. [8] In the 2022 general election,Demapan ran for an open seat in the Northern Mariana Islands Senate. He finished third of five candidates for the two open seats,losing to Democratic candidate Celina R. Babauta and Democratic-aligned independent candidate Corina Magofna. [9] [10] After the start of the 23rd Commonwealth Legislature,the predominantly-Republican minority chose Patrick Hofschneider San Nicolas to succeed Demapan as minority leader. [11]

The Covenant Party was a political party in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) advocating governmental and financial reform. It was named after the Covenant to Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Political Union with the United States of America,Act of Mar. 24,1976,Pub. L. 94-241,90 Stat. 263,codified as amended at 48 U.S.C. §1801 note. In the legislative elections of 2003,the Covenant Party won nine of eighteen seats. The party mostly made up of members from the Republican Party,but many prominent Democrats would also join the party. In the 2005 general elections,the Covenant Party increased its position as one of the strongest parties in the Commonwealth when Benigno R. Fitial,the party's gubernatorial candidate,won the election. The Covenant Party won seven of eighteen seats in the commonwealth's House of Representatives and three of nine seats in its Senate. In the Commonwealth Legislature 2007 elections,the Covenant Party won only four of twenty seats in the House of Representatives.
Benigno Repeki Fitial is a Northern Marianan politician who served was the sixth governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. The second longest-serving governor in CNMI history,Fitial was elected on November 6,2005,assumed office on January 9,2006,and was re-elected to a (five-year) second term in 2009. He was impeached by the CNMI House of Representatives on February 11,2013,and was scheduled to face trial before the CNMI Senate to determine if he should be removed from office. He resigned on February 20,2013,after 7 years,1 month,and 11 days in office.

The third longest-serving governor in CNMI history,Torres took office upon the death of Governor Eloy Inos on December 29,2015,before being reelected as governor in his own right in 2018. He previously served as the tenth lieutenant governor,having been elected to that post in 2014.

The 2020 Northern Mariana Islands general election was held on Tuesday,3 November,2020,corresponding with the elections of other federal and state offices,including the nationwide 2020 United States House of Representatives elections and the 2020 United States general elections. This election oversaw the return of the CNMI Democratic Party as a major force in CNMI politics for the first time in a decade. 2020 also saw the first time a party was able to challenge the CNMI Republican Party since the Covenant Party was dissolved in 2013. Four incumbent representatives that were elected as independents announced that they would run for re-election as Democrats while another independent aligns with the party. Prior to the 2020 election,the Democrats had won a legislative seat since their last wins in the 2007 general elections. The result of the 2020 general election was that the CNMI had experienced a blue wave,with the Democrats controlling nearly half the house and adding a member to the senate. The Republicans lost the trifecta it held since the 2016 Northern Mariana Islands general election and the single-party system it held since 2013. Voter turnout was at 72.05%,lower than the previous general elections election years of 2018,which was 77.4%,and 2014,which was 76.7%.
