Angel Elderkin (born August 18, 1977) is an American college basketball coach and was the head coach of the Appalachian State Mountaineers women's basketball team from 2014 until 2024. [1]
Elderkin played basketball for the women's basketball team at the University of Southern Maine. After graduation, she landed her first coaching job at East Tennessee State as a special assistant to the head coach. Once Elderkin earned a Master of Arts in Physical Education and Exercise Science from ETSU, she accepted an assistant coaching role at Siena. Following the end of the 2004–05 season, Elderkin left Siena and began a graduate assistant role under the legendary Pat Summitt at Tennessee. At Tennessee, she was promoted to video coordinator after one season. Elderkin then spent time as an assistant coach at LSU, St. John's, and Virginia before being named the head coach of the Appalachian State Mountaineers women's basketball team in 2014.
In 2016, Coach Elderkin was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. [2] Despite having to undergo chemotherapy following a stage three cancer diagnosis, Elderkin continued with her head coaching duties. [3] For her bravery in her battle against cancer and continued coaching, Elderkin received the Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award presented by the United States Basketball Writers Association in 2016. [4] Although Little Rock Trojans women's basketball head coach Joe Foley was selected as the 2017 Sun Belt Conference coach of the year, Foley gave his award to Elderkin. [5]
Elderkin guided Appalachian State to the 2019 WBI championship. In 2021, Elderkin signed a four-year extension through the 2026–27 season. [6]
Following the 2023–24 season, Elderkin announced that she would be stepping down from her head coaching role, stating, "This decision was not easy, and was entirely on my own due to personal reasons." [7] During her tenure, Elderkin compiled the second-most wins of any head coach in program history. [7]

Patricia Susan Summitt was an American women's college basketball head coach who acquired 1,098 career wins, the most in college basketball history at the time of her retirement. She served as the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974 to 2012.
Appalachian State University is a public university in Boone, North Carolina. It was founded as a teachers' college in 1899 by brothers B. B. and D. D. Dougherty and the latter's wife, Lillie Shull Dougherty. The university expanded to include other programs in 1967 and joined the University of North Carolina System in 1971.
Gerald Hundley Moore is a former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at North Texas State University—now the University of North Texas—from 1979 to 1980, at Texas Tech University from 1981 to 1985, and at Appalachian State University from 1989 to 2012, compiling a career college football coaching record of 242–134–2. In his 24 years at Appalachian State, Moore posted a losing season only once. He led his 2005 Mountaineers team to the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship. This was the first national championship for any college football team in the state of North Carolina. Moore and the Mountaineers repeated as champions in 2006 and 2007, achieving the first "three-peat" in NCAA Division I FCS/I-AA history. Moore was forced out as head coach at the conclusion of the 2012 season. He was selected for inclusion into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame, and College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
Mickie Faye DeMoss is a former American college basketball coach and player. She was the women's head coach at the University of Florida and the University of Kentucky. She was also an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech University, University of Tennessee, University of Texas, Auburn University, Memphis State University, and the WNBA's Indiana Fever. DeMoss was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018 as a Contributor - Assistant Coach. She retired after 45 years of coaching basketball in some capacity in July 2022, while chief of staff for Georgia Tech women's basketball.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers are the athletic teams that represent Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, United States. The Mountaineers compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and were a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) between 1972 and 2014. On July 1, 2014, Appalachian State moved to the Sun Belt Conference. Appalachian State fields varsity teams in 17 sports, 7 for men and 10 for women. The football team competes in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly I-A, as a result of the transition to the Sun Belt. The wrestling team remains in the Southern Conference because the Sun Belt does not sponsor the sport. In field hockey, another sport not sponsored by the Sun Belt, Appalachian State joined the Mid-American Conference for the 2017 season after playing two seasons as an independent following the demise of its former league, the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac). While rivalries exist with Sun Belt west division schools such as Troy and Louisiana, Appalachian State's main Sun Belt rivals are east division members Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern, as well as rekindled rivalries from the days in FCS with recent Sun Belt additions Marshall and James Madison. Historically prior to joining the Sun Belt, Western Carolina and Furman were prominent rivalries.
Jane Gibson Albright is an American women's college basketball coach who was most recently head coach at Nevada from 2008 to 2017. Albright was previously head coach at Northern Illinois from 1984 to 1994, Wisconsin from 1994 to 2003, and Wichita State from 2003 to 2008.

Angela Lawson is the senior associate director of athletics at the University of the Incarnate Word. She played college basketball at Louisiana Tech University where she was a three-year starter for Leon Barmore and the Lady Techsters and won the 1988 NCAA Division I National Championship in her senior season. Lawson went to the University of Tennessee to earn a master's degree and serve as a graduate assistant for Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols. In her second season as GA, Tennessee won the 1991 NCAA Division I National Championship. Lawson then took an assistant coaching position at Texas State, which she served for 3 seasons. Then she took an assistant coaching position at Baylor with former Louisiana Tech coach Sonja Hogg. After serving 6 years at Baylor, Lawson took the head coaching position which at the University of the Incarnate Word until 2013.
Niya Denise Butts is an American women's college basketball coach, currently associate head coach at the University of Kentucky. She is the former head coach at the University of Arizona. As a player, she was a part of two national championships at the University of Tennessee.
Frances Hollingsworth "Holly" Warlick is an American college basketball coach who was head coach for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. She replaced head coach Pat Summitt prior to the 2012–13 season and held the position until the end of the 2018–19 season. Warlick was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

The 2016–17 Appalachian State Mountaineers women's basketball team represented Appalachian State University in the 2016–17 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Eagles, led by third year head coach Angel Elderkin, played their home games at George M. Holmes Convocation Center and were members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 13–19, 6–12 in Sun Belt play to finish in ninth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt women's tournament where they lost to Little Rock.
The 2017–18 Appalachian State Mountaineers women's basketball team represented Appalachian State University in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Eagles, led by fourth-year head coach Angel Elderkin, played their home games at George M. Holmes Convocation Center and were members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 8–23, 5–13 in Sun Belt play, to finish in ninth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt women's tournament where they lost to Little Rock.
