The Animae Gospel Choir is a vocal ensemble based in Malta. It was founded in 2008 by Glen Vella and it has since grown into a 23 gospel singer-troupe.
Launched in 2008, the Animae Gospel Choir was founded by Maltese singer Glen Vella, who, after experiencing the sound of the Soweto Gospel Choir in the Netherlands, joined forces with Pamela Bezzina, who is the Choir's vocal director and arranger, [1] [2] and Leontine Spiteri to create the choir.
The name ‘Animae’ is derived from the Latin word for ‘soul’, anima, and the Animae Gospel Choir aims to be 'a spiritual ensemble that promotes positivity and unity'. [3]
The Animae Gospel Choir is made up of 23 singers including three who have represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest (Debbie Scerri (1997), Glen Vella (2011) and Amber Bondin (2015)).[ citation needed ] Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, the current US Ambassador to Malta, is also a member of the Choir.[ citation needed ]
In 2009 the Choir held its first national, musical performance, entitled Animae Gospel Choir in Concert, at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. [4]
Guests Chiara Siracusa (of Eurovision) and Ivan Grech (of Winter Moods) joined the troupe on stage, along with a seven-piece band that was directed by Christian Borg. The 90-minute programme included classics from the genres of pop, soul and gospel music, and featured songs by Michael Jackson, Zucchero and Anastacia, among others. [5]
On 30 July 2010, the Animae Gospel Choir performed two songs alongside Winter Moods at a concert attended by 10,000 people - one of the biggest audiences ever amassed by a Maltese band. [6]
The second Animae Gospel Choir in Concert took place over two nights in March 2012, and was held under the patronage of George Abela, the then President of Malta. Taking place in Republic Hall at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, which is Malta's largest conference centre, the concert included 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' and 'Livin' on a Prayer'.
In 2012 the Choir also took part in the Parkinson's Awareness Week organised by the MPDA (Malta Parkinson's Disease Association) to help raise awareness about Parkinson's disease. [7]
Following the release of their first single 'Ninni La Tibkix Iżjed' in 2013, the Animae Gospel Choir was also invited to perform this traditional, Maltese, Christmas anthem and other worship tunes at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, during the official Christmas 2014 celebrations.[ citation needed ]
In 2014, the Choir took part in the revival of the Maltese epic 'Gensna' ('Our Nation'), [8] and introduced the revolutionary ‘Animae Experience’, which has created a platform for non-members to interact with the choir through song and worship. In September of the same year the Choir, under the patronage of Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, the current President of Malta, performed during MaltaDay at Westminster Cathedral in London, [9] [10] [11] while in December they sang an a cappella rendition of the Maltese National Anthem outside the Grandmaster's Palace in Valletta during Malta's official 40th anniversary celebrations of the Republic [12] [13]
In 2015 the ensemble gave a 90-minute performance on the bicentenary of the birth of St John Bosco, [14] and they are now working on their third, national Animae Gospel Choir in Concert, which will take place in October 2015.

Valletta is an administrative unit and the capital of Malta. Żebbuġ is an administrative unit of Malta, in the northwest coast of the island of Gozo. It is located close to Għarb and Għasri and is built on two hilltop plateaus, Ta' Abram and Ix-Xagħra taż-Żebbuġ. The fishing port and tourist resort of Marsalforn lies within the Żebbuġ Council. The village has a population of 2,956, which makes it the fifth largest in Gozo, after Xewkija.
L-Għanja tal-Poplu is a popular Maltese song competition first organized by Youth Travel Circle (YTC) on 5 May 1973 at the St. Albert College in Valletta. The founder of YTC is Rev. Maurice Mifsud. Initially the contest had to register as YTC members. From 1987 onward, the contest took a national dimension. The competing songs are sung primarily in Maltese and are written either by the singers themselves or other songwriters. In the 1990s the contest started being transmitted on local television stations. This contest is today organised by the voluntary organisation L-Għanja tal-Poplu and is slso supported by Arts Council Malta.
Teatru Manoel is a theatre and important performing arts venue in Malta. The theatre is often referred to as simply "The Manoel", and is named after Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller, Fra António Manoel de Vilhena, who ordered its construction in 1731. The theatre is reputed to be Europe's third-oldest working theatre, and the oldest theatre still in operation in the Commonwealth of Nations.
Deborah (Debbie) Scerri is a Maltese television presenter and singer.
Malta participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with the song "One Life" written by Paul Giordimaina and Fleur Balzan. The song was performed by Glen Vella. The Maltese entry for the 2011 contest in Düsseldorf, Germany was selected through the national final Malta Eurosong 2011, organised by the Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). The competition consisted of a semi-final round and a final, held on 11 and 12 February 2011, respectively, where "One Life" performed by Glen Vella eventually emerged as the winning entry after scoring the most points from a six-member jury and a public televote.

Gianluca Bezzina is a Maltese medical doctor and part-time singer who represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden.
Although Malta is a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea with a small population, it is nonetheless rich in its history and its culture. When in the 1950s, in nearby Italy the San Remo Festival, and later in Switzerland, the Eurovision Song Contest came into existence, Malta soon followed suit by organizing its own National Song Festival.
The Church of Our Lady of Liesse is a church in Valletta, Malta. The church was built in 1740 on the site of a 17th-century church. The cupola was built to the designs of the Maltese Architect Francesco Zammit. The church is located near the shores of the Grand Harbour, close to Lascaris Battery and the site of the fish market. It is especially venerated by the people of the port area.
Sebastian Calleja is a Maltese singer. He started his singing career at the age of 11. Calleja is a resident singer, for the 5th year in a row, on 'Hadd Ghalik' which is aired on the national Maltese television channel TVM. He performs some acting in various local pageants or shows which gave him the spotlight in 2017 and 2018 playing one of the leading roles in the different Good Friday Pageant organised by the inmates at Corradino Correctional Facility in Kordin, Malta, which had all the performances sold out. In 2016, he also was chosen to be part of the song and music video for the Maltese version of the World Youth Day Song 2016 – 'Henjin li jhennu'.
Eleanor Bezzina is a Maltese sports shooter. She competed in the women's 10 metre air pistol event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's 10 m air pistol and Women's 25 m pistol.
