Anisul Huq (born 30 March 1956) [1] is a Bangladeshi lawyer and politician. He was the Bangladesh government's Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs from 2014 to 6 August 2024. [2] [3] [4]
Anisul Huq was the son of Serajul Huq, a lawyer and a former member of Parliament. He was educated at Brahmanbaria High School, the University of Dhaka (BA (Hons) English Literature; master's in English Literature; LLB) and King's College London (LLM). [2]
Huq was enrolled as a lawyer in the Dhaka district bar in November 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in November 1987. In 2001 he was enrolled in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh as a lawyer and became a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 2010.
On his father's death, Anisul Huq became the chief special prosecutor for both the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman case and the Jail killing. It was under his counsel that the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman case was completed and a judgment was delivered by the apex court. Anisul Huq was also the chief counsel and special prosecutor for the Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh, and the chief prosecutor for the Peelkhana carnage case which relates to the mutiny of the Bangladesh Rifles in 2009. This case was also completed successfully under his leadership.
The late Advocate Serajul Huq and his son Anisul Huq both are senior advocates of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, acted as counsel for most of the important, leading and sensitive criminal cases of the country during the 1980–2014 period. [2]
In the general elections held on 5 January 2014, Anisul Huq was elected as a member of Parliament from the Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba-Akhaura) constituency as a candidate of the Bangladesh Awami League. He took the oath as a member of Parliament on 9 January 2014. Thereafter he was inducted in the cabinet as a minister on 12 January 2014 and was allocated the portfolio of Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
In the 2018 Bangladeshi general election held on 30 December 2018, Anisul Huq was again elected to Parliament from the same constituency, as a candidate of the Awami League. He took his oath as a member of Parliament on 3 January 2019. He was further appointed as the Minister for the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and took that oath on 7 January 2019 as Minister. He is the first person to be Minister of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs for two consecutive terms for Bangladesh. [2]
Following the exile of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after a series of protests, Haq was arrested on August 13 at Sadarghat while attempting to flee by boat, accompanied by former adviser to Sheikh Hasina, Salman F. Rahman. [5] They were shown arrested in connection with the murders of a student and a hawker that took place on July 16 during the quota reform movement. [6]
Huq is married to Nur Amtullah Rina since 18 December 1987. [2] She died on 2 January 1991 in a road accident. [7] His mother, Jahanara Huq, was the first chairman of Citizens Bank Bangladesh.[ citation needed ]
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, popularly known by the honorific prefix Bangabandhu, was a Bangladeshi politician, revolutionary, statesman, activist and diarist. As a politician, Mujib had held continuous positions either as Bangladesh's president or as its prime minister from April 1971 until his assassination in August 1975. Mujib successfully led the Bangladeshi independence movement and restored Bengali sovereignty after over two centuries following the Battle of Plassey in 1757, for which he is honoured as the "Father of the Nation" in Bangladesh who declared independence. In the 2004 BBC opinion poll, Mujib was voted as the Greatest Bengali of all time.
The Bangladesh Awami League, simply known as Awami League, is one of the major political parties in Bangladesh. The oldest existing political party in the country, the party played a large role in achieving Bangladeshi independence both before and after the Bangladesh Liberation War. It is also one of the two most dominant parties in the country, along with its archrival Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Throughout its tenure as the ruling party from January 6, 2009 to August 5, 2024, it has been consistently described as authoritarian and dictatorial.

He holds the position of vice chairman at BEXIMCO Group, one of the Bangladesh's largest conglomerates. He was the president of several trade bodies, including the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO). He is currently in the custody of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on the charge of instigating killing during the Bangladesh quota reform movement.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the first female speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad since April 2013 until August 2024. At 46, she became the youngest person to assume that office. She was also the chairperson of the executive committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association between 2014 and 2017. She previously served as the state minister of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of Bangladesh.

The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup in Bangladesh launched by mid-ranking army officers on 15 August 1975. The officers were part of a conspiracy to assassinate founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, whose administration post-independence grew corrupt and authoritarian until he unscrupulously established a one-party state led by the socialist BaKSAL. Mujib, along with his resident family members, were killed during the coup but was survived by his two then-expat daughters, one of them being future prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The officers were led by Capt. Abdul Majed, Maj. Syed Faruque Rahman, Maj. Khandaker Abdur Rashid and Maj. Shariful Haque Dalim.
