Anonymus is a Canadian thrash metal band from Montreal, Quebec, founded in 1989. [1] Its members are Carlos Araya (drums), Oscar Souto (bass and vocals), Daniel Souto (guitar) and Jef Fortin (guitar). [2]

History

The five musicians (the current members plus Marco Calliari) grew up together in Montreal and started their band in high school. [3] In 1992, they independently released the EP The Dream That Lies [4] and, in 1992, the EP Anonymus. [5] In 1994, also independently, they released their first album, Ni Vu, Ni Connu (Not Seen, Not Known). [6]

In 1995, they were signed to the new Montreal label Disques MPV, which paired them with the band Overbass to release the 10-track split Live Crash. [7] In 1996, they re-released Ni Vu, Ni Connu which, despite being all in French, had received excellent reviews. [8] [9] [10] At the 1996 MIMI (Montreal Independent Music Industry) awards, the band won Best Metal/Rock Group. [11]

In 1997, Anonymus released the album Stress, whose songs are in English, Spanish, Italian and French. [12] [13]

In 1998, they played Quebec's Festival Polliwog; their performance was included on the concert's compilation CD. [14] That November, they toured Mexico with Blind Guardian and, in 1998 and 1999, played the Milwaukee Metalfest. They also toured France with the French metal band Watcha. [15]

In 1999, Anonymus released the album Instinct [16] which, critics noted, was a departure from their earlier music. It was more mainstream, and more English-oriented, and appeared to be an attempt to break in to the American metal scene. [17] [18] 2002's Daemonium, [19] released by Disques MPV's new division Kafka, got very good reviews but this was the last of the band's releases with Disques MPV, which went out of business soon after Daemonium's release. [20] [21]

In 2003, Anonymus collaborated with Quebec satirical singer Serge Robert, aka Mononc' Serge, to record the album L'Académie du massacre, which Robert released independently. [22] [23] They would do this again in 2008, with Robert releasing their joint album Musique Barbare. It was nominated for Best Metal Album at the 2009 GAMIQ Awards. [24] [25]

Their fifth studio album, Chapter Chaos Begins , [26] was released by Galy Records in 2006, to mainly positive reviews. [27] [28] [29] [30] [31]

The band was nominated for a Canadian Music Week Indie Award for Favorite Metal Artist/Group Or Duo of the Year in 2008. [32] [33]

Still without a label, Anonymus decided to release their own music and formed Groupe Anonymus. They released the 2009 compilation album *XX Metal. [34] That was followed in 2011 by État Brute [35] and, in 2015, Envers et contre tous (Against All Odds). [36] [37]

In 2016, Anonymus collaborated with the poets Bertrand Laverdure, Roger Des Roches, Erika Soucy, Thierry Dimanche and Benoît Jutras to create "Poésie Oralité Métal Musique Écrit" (Poetry Orality Metal Written Music). [38] [39] They toured France in support of it, [40] then took park in Ottawa's poetry festival, VERSeFest. [41]

In 2019, Anonymus released the album Sacrifices [42] then, in 2020 and on the new label Bam&Co-Heavy, La Bestia, their first album which is entirely in Spanish (all band members but Fortin are of Chilean descent). It includes one new song and 11 songs from previous albums which the band members translated into Spanish. The concept came from their desire to move into Latin America, South America and Spain. [43] Founding member Marco Calliari left the band in 2003 to pursue a solo career in Worldbeat music [44] but, for this album, he returned to re-record the song "Tierra", which is sung in Spanish and Italian. [45] The album, which was released via livestream, [46] won the 2020 GAMIQ Award for Metal Album of the Year. It also won the first-ever "Piggy Award", named in honour of the late Voivod guitarist Denis D'Amour, aka 'Piggy', and awarded in recognition to those who have forged successful careers in the Quebec music industry. [47]

Aside from the band, Fortin is a producer [48] and the other members have played with several other bands. [49] [50] [51] Oscar Souto is featured in two songs, "Inner Capsule" and "Tunnel Effect" on the Quo Vadis DVD "Defiant Indoctrination", for which he also does guest vocals on the studio versions. [52] The band can be seen in B.A.R.F.'s DVD From The Grave. Carlos is on the drum for half of the show and the band members make an appearance in "Taper Du Pied". [53]

G.I.S.M. was a Japanese punk metal band formed in Tokyo in 1981. Although the guitar style resembled heavy metal in many aspects, GISM was one of the first Japanese hardcore bands, while at the same time drawing influence from the early industrial/avant-garde music scene—something uncommon in punk bands at that time. Hirax is an American thrash metal band from Cypress, California. Starting in 1984 under the leadership of vocalist Katon W. De Pena, the band played in Los Angeles and San Francisco with several of their thrash metal peers such as Metallica, Exodus, and Slayer. The band was an early example of thrash metal, speed metal and crossover thrash, yet inspired by cross-genre influences including blues vocalist Sam Cooke, who De Pena once cited as "the greatest vocalist [De Pena] has ever heard."

Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives is an online encyclopedia based upon musical artists who predominantly perform heavy metal music along with its various sub-genres. Encyclopaedia Metallum was described by Matt Sullivan of Nashville Scene as "the Internet's central database for all that is 'tr00' in the metal world." Terrorizer described the site as "a fully-exhaustive list of pretty much every metal band ever, with full discographies, an active forum and an interlinking members list that shows the ever-incestuous beauty of the metal scene". Nevertheless, there are exceptions for bands which fall under disputed genres not accepted by the website.

Marco Calliari is a singer-songwriter born in Quebec from Italian parents. He began his career in 1989 in forming the thrash metal group Anonymus alongside Carlos Araya and brothers Daniel and Oscar Souto. Since 2003, he pursued a solo career that has so far released three albums: Che la vita, Mia dolce vita, and Al faro est.

Mononc' Serge is a Québécois musician and poet who sings in French. He is best known for his vulgar lyrics and his irreverent songs making fun of local celebrities and politicians. He is also quite sardonic with the Quebec federalist movement, and their counterparts in the Rest Of Canada (R.O.C.). "Mononc' Serge" is French for "Uncle Serge".

They are currently signed to Unique Leader Records. Following the departure of guitarist "Helv" in 2009, no original members remain in the band.

Antiquus was a Canadian power metal band from Vancouver, British Columbia. Their music combined different styles of metal into a unique fusion most closely likened to power metal, while being reasonably progressive. In their own words, "Far from the mainstream, Antiquus draws upon the roots of metal to create its signature sound - aggressive, melodic, intelligent. Clean, strong vocals and complex story-telling lyrics set against a sonic canvas of harmony guitars, edgy bass lines and punchy drumming."

Ukrainian metal is the heavy metal music scene of Ukraine. The most common Ukrainian heavy metal subgenres are black, pagan, folk and death metal. The most popular and well-known bands are black metal bands Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum, Khors, Kroda, folk metal bands Holy Blood, Tin Sontsia, Veremiy and Kraamola.

Andy Sneap is an English guitarist, record producer and composer with over 100 albums to his name, most of which have been produced at his Backstage Recording studios in rural Derbyshire. Some of the most critically acclaimed production work on albums include Deliverance by Opeth and Disarm the Descent by Killswitch Engage; for which he earned a Swedish Grammis and a US Grammy nomination, respectively. As a performer, he first built his reputation as one of the guitarists in the British thrash metal band Sabbat, and played with them up until their disbanding. In 2018 he joined Judas Priest as a touring guitarist, following long-time lead guitarist Glenn Tipton's diagnosis of Parkinson's disease which conflicts with his touring abilities.

Sulphur Aeon is a German death metal band founded in 2010. The band has released three full-length studio albums. The first album, Swallowed by the Ocean's Tide was released in 2013 and the most recent, The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos in 2018.

<i>Momentum</i> (DGM album) 2013 studio album by DGM

Momentum is the eight full-length studio album of Italian progressive metal band DGM. This is the second album with this line-up and it was released on March 26, 2013, for the last time by Italian label Scarlet Records. The album was produced by band guitarist Simone Mularoni.
