Ansito Walter is a politician and academic from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
Walter served as the Governor of Chuuk State for two consecutive terms from April 1997 to April 19,2005. [2] He was succeeded by Wesley Simina in 2005.
Walter obtained a doctorate in philosophy from the former United States International University,which has since merged to form Alliant International University. [2] He has worked as an academic at several universities throughout the Micronesia region since 1986,within and outside the FSM. In 2006,Walter joined the faculty of the School of Business and Public Administration of the University of Guam,where he has focused on expanding programs and curriculum for students of Chuukese descent. [2]
A founding member of the Center for Micronesian Empowerment,Walter also sits on the board of directors of the Pacific Asia Travel Association and the Guam Charter Schools Policy Board. [2]
In January 2011,newly inaugurated Guam Governor Eddie Calvo appointed Walter to the Guam Education Board. [2] Calvo was forced to withdraw Walter's nomination,however,because he was not a U.S. citizen. [3]
The Federated States of Micronesia,or simply Micronesia,is an island country in Micronesia,a subregion of Oceania. The federation consists of four states—from west to east,Yap,Chuuk,Pohnpei and Kosrae—that are spread across the western Pacific. Together,the states comprise around 607 islands that cover a longitudinal distance of almost 2,700 km (1,700 mi) just north of the equator. They lie northeast of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea,south of Guam and the Marianas,west of Nauru and the Marshall Islands,east of Palau and the Philippines,about 2,900 km (1,800 mi) north of eastern Australia,3,400 km (2,100 mi) southeast of Japan,and some 4,000 km (2,485 mi) southwest of the main islands of the Hawaiian Islands.
The politics of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) takes place in a framework of a federal assembly-independent representative democratic republic. The President of the Federated States of Micronesia is both head of state and head of government. Executive power is exercised by the president and his cabinet,while legislative power is vested in both the president and the Congress. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
Tosiwo Nakayama was the first President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). He served two terms from 1979 until 1987.
Weno,formerly Moen,is an island municipality of Chuuk State of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It is the largest town in the FSM. It has an estimated area of 20 square kilometers.
Chuuk State is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The other states are Kosrae State,Pohnpei State,and Yap State. It consists of several island groups:Namoneas,Faichuuk,the Hall Islands,Namonuito Atoll,Pattiw,and the Mortlock Islands. Chuuk is by far the FSM's most populous state,with 50,000 inhabitants on 120 square kilometers. Chuuk Lagoon is where most people live. Weno island,in the lagoon,is Chuuk's state capital and the country's biggest city. It may hold a referendum on independence in the near future,although this referendum has been repeatedly postponed.
The State of Yap is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia,located in the westernmost portion of the country. The state borders Palau to the southwest,Guam to the north,and Chuuk State to the east. According to the state's population census carried out in 2020,the total population is 11,577 residing across a total area of 119.54 sq km,though a large majority of the area is water. The only town area in the state,Colonia,serves as the state capital.
Typhoon Chataan,known in the Philippines as Typhoon Gloria,was the deadliest natural disaster in the history of Chuuk,a state in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The typhoon formed on June 28,2002,near the FSM,and for several days it meandered while producing heavy rainfall across the region. On Chuuk,the highest 24-hour precipitation total was 506 mm (19.9 in),which was greater than the average monthly total. The rain produced floods up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) deep,causing landslides across the island that killed 47 people. There was also one death on nearby Pohnpei,and damage in the FSM totaled over $100 million.
The College of Micronesia-FSM (COM-FSM) is a public community college in the Federated States of Micronesia. It began operation in 1963 as the Micronesian Teacher Education Center.
Indirect presidential elections were held in the Federated States of Micronesia on May 11,2007.
The Habele Outer Island Education Fund is a South Carolina–based charitable organization serving K-12 aged students in Micronesia. Habele's initial geographic focus was the so-called "Outer Islands" of Yap State as well as lagoon and outer islands in neighboring Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia. It now serves students of all backgrounds throughout the Freely Associated States.
Emanuel "Manny" Mori is a Micronesian politician who served as President of the Federated States of Micronesia from 11 May 2007 to 11 May 2015.
Andon L. Amaraich was a Micronesian public servant,politician,diplomat and judge. He was,at the time of his death,Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He has been described by the Micronesian government as "one of the founding fathers of the Federated States of Micronesia".
Wesley W. Simina is a Micronesian politician who has served as the president of the Federated States of Micronesia since 2023. He served as the governor of Chuuk State,one of the four states that constitute the Federated States of Micronesia,from July 2005 to July 2011.
The office of the Governor of Chuuk is the highest elected position in the state of Chuuk,Federated States of Micronesia. The state was called Truk until 1989,so the title of this office prior to the change was Governor of Truk.
An independence referendum for Chuuk State to secede from the Federated States of Micronesia was originally scheduled to take place in March 2015. However,it has been delayed three times and it is uncertain if it will take place. The most populous of the four states within the FSM,Chuuk has high levels of unemployment and there are long-standing tensions over the distribution of funding within the FSM. Other concerns include political power within the federation and the preservation of cultural identity.
Typhoon Maysak,known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Chedeng,was the most powerful pre-April tropical cyclone on record in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The fourth named storm of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season,Maysak originated as a tropical depression on March 26. The next day,the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) upgraded the depression to a tropical storm and assigned it the name Maysak. According to the JMA,Maysak became the second typhoon of the year on March 28. The typhoon underwent explosive intensification into a Category 5 super typhoon on March 31,passing near the islands of Chuuk and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia. After maintaining that intensity for 18 hours,Maysak weakened,made landfall over the Philippine island of Luzon as a minimal tropical storm,and dissipated shortly afterwards.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Federated States of Micronesia refers to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The church's first known missionaries arrived on July 5,1978. As of December 31,2022,there were 5,966 members in 23 congregations in FSM. The LDS Church has congregations in every state in the FSM.
Chuuk Women's Council is a women's rights organization in Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Founded in 1984,it represents over sixty women's groups spread across the state,and actively campaigns for greater gender equality,as well as running programs that focus on health,education and environmental issues
Gardenia Aisek is a Microneasian educator and government official. Aisek was the first woman elected to the Chuuk State Legislature. She then became the first female Secretary of the Federated States of Micronesia Department of Education.
Sasao H. Gouland was the governor of Chuuk State,Micronesia from 1990 to June 1996.
