Anthony P. Monaco (born October 10,1959) is an American geneticist and university administrator. He was the 13th president of Tufts University from 2011 to 2023.
Monaco was born in Wilmington,Delaware, and graduated from the Salesianum School in 1977. [1] [2] [3] He earned an undergraduate degree as an independent concentrator in neuroscience and behavior at Princeton University in 1981 and played goalie on their men's water polo team. [4]
Monaco earned a Ph.D. in Neurobiology in 1987 and his M.D. in 1988 in a joint program from Harvard University. His doctoral research, supervised by Louis M. Kunkel, led to his landmark discovery of the gene responsible for X-linked Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in London, where he worked on the human genome project at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK),and subsequently a faculty position at the Institute of Molecular Medicine of the University of Oxford. Monaco identified the first gene specifically involved in human speech and language. Nobel Prize-winning biologist Paul Nurse once stated "Tony Monaco was among the first to recognize the importance of what was still an emerging research frontier, human genetics, and its vast potential to address problems such as cancer and autism." [5]
Monaco held a series of administrative positions at Oxford, the last being Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Resources),prior to being appointed President of Tufts University. [6] [7] He was also the Head of the Neurodevelopmental and Neurological Disorders Group at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics.
Monaco assumed the office of President of Tufts University in August 2011 from Lawrence Bacow. [8] [9] On February 14,2022,Monaco announced that he would step down as president in summer 2023. [10] His successor,Sunil Kumar, was announced on November 17,2022 and assumed office on July 1,2023. [11]
Tufts University is a private research university in Medford and Somerville,Massachusetts,United States, with additional facilities in Boston and Grafton,as well as Talloires,France. It was founded in 1852 as Tufts College by Christian universalists who sought to provide a nonsectarian institution of higher learning. Tufts remained a small liberal arts college until the 1970s,when it transformed into a large research university offering several doctorates.
The National Academy of Medicine (NAM),known as the Institute of Medicine (IoM) until 2015,is an American nonprofit,non-governmental organization. The National Academy of Medicine is a part of the National Academies of Sciences,Engineering, and Medicine, along with the National Academy of Sciences (NAS),National Academy of Engineering (NAE),and the National Academies of Sciences,Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
Eric Steven Lander is an American mathematician and geneticist who is a professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),and a professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School. Eric Lander is founding director emeritus of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
Victor Almon McKusick was an American internist and medical geneticist, and Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital,Baltimore. He was a proponent of the mapping of the human genome due to its use for studying congenital diseases. He is well known for his studies of the Amish. He was the original author and, until his death, remained chief editor of Mendelian Inheritance in Man (MIM) and its online counterpart Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM). He is widely known as the "father of medical genetics".
Sir Walter Fred Bodmer is a German-born British human geneticist.
Janet Davison Rowley was an American human geneticist and the first scientist to identify a chromosomal translocation as the cause of leukemia and other cancers, thus proving that cancer is a genetic disease. Rowley spent the majority of her life working in Chicago and received many awards and honors throughout her life, recognizing her achievements and contributions in the area of genetics.
Salesianum School is a Catholic independent school for boys located in Wilmington,Delaware. It is run independently within the Diocese of Wilmington and is operated by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales.
Sir Paul Maxime Nurse is an English geneticist, former President of the Royal Society and Chief Executive and Director of the Francis Crick Institute. He was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Leland Hartwell and Tim Hunt, for their discoveries of protein molecules that control the division of cells in the cell cycle.
Rudolf Jaenisch is a Professor of Biology at MIT and a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. He is a pioneer of transgenic science,in which an animal’s genetic makeup is altered. Jaenisch has focused on creating genetically modified mice to study cancer, epigenetic reprogramming and neurological diseases.
Mary-Claire King is an American geneticist. She was the first to show that breast cancer can be inherited due to mutations in the gene she called BRCA1. She studies human genetics and is particularly interested in genetic heterogeneity and complex traits. She studies the interaction of genetics and environmental influences and their effects on human conditions such as breast and ovarian cancer, inherited deafness, schizophrenia,HIV,systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. She has been the American Cancer Society Professor of the Department of Genome Sciences and of Medical Genetics in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington since 1995.
The University of Utah School of Medicine is located on the upper campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City,Utah. It was founded in 1905 and is currently the only MD-granting medical school in the state of Utah.
Charles Joseph Epstein was an American geneticist who was severely injured in 1993 when he became a victim of a mail bomb attack by the Unabomber. He was a researcher at the University of California,San Francisco and the Buck Institute for Age Research.

The Professorship of Genetics at the University of Oxford is a professorship that is attached to a fellowship at Keble College,Oxford. It was established in 1969 to address the relative lack of genetics available to undergraduate students at the university and has contributed to the development of genetics as an academic discipline there. The decision to create the position came at a time when notable geneticists at the university –the ecological geneticist Edmund Brisco Ford and the Sherardian Professor of Botany Cyril Darlington –had retired or were about to retire. The university created a lecturer and a demonstrator post in the discipline at the same time.
Charis Eng was a Singaporean American physician-scientist and geneticist at the Cleveland Clinic, notable for identifying the PTEN gene. She was the chairwoman and founding director of the Genomic Medicine Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, founding director and attending clinical cancer geneticist of the institute's clinical component, the Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare, and professor and vice chairwoman of the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
