Anthony Stewart (born 15 April 1970) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 17 seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL). He also played multiple seasons for the Hobart Chargers in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL).

The South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) was Australia's pre-eminent semi-professional basketball league from its inception in 1981 until it was disbanded in 2018. The league comprised both a men's and women's competition and was run by the country's governing body, Basketball Australia. The league was founded in 1981 and became the basis of what was known as the Continental Basketball Association during the 1990s, and later the Australian Basketball Association during the 2000s. Over the years, the SEABL boasted teams from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.

Career

Stewart began his career with the Hobart Devils in 1992, but later joined the Perth Wildcats in 1995 to become an integral part of the Wildcats championship team that year. Stewart continued with the Wildcats for five more seasons and won another championship with the team in 2000. He left the club following his second championship and joined the Cairns Taipans.

The Hobart Devils are a defunct professional basketball team that competed in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). Based in Hobart, Tasmania, the team was the only representative from the state of Tasmania for the majority of its tenure, but was one of three teams that had their NBL licenses revoked by the league directors in 1996 due to financial difficulties. While not the first time teams had folded in the league, the sudden departure of the Devils, Supercats and Rollers signified that the NBL's successful era was truly over.

The Wildcats compete in the National Basketball League (NBL) and play their home games at RAC Arena, known colloquially as "The Jungle". Their sister team, the Perth Lynx, play in the Women's National Basketball League.

Cairns Taipans basketball team

The Cairns Taipans are an Australian professional basketball team based in Cairns, Queensland. The Taipans compete in the National Basketball League (NBL) and play their home games at the Cairns Convention Centre, known colloquially as "The Snakepit". The Taipans are the only not-for-profit club left in the league.

Stewart played seven seasons with the Taipans before leaving the club and joining the Townsville Crocodiles for the 2007–08 NBL season. However, he managed just four games for the Crocodiles and did not return to the club for the 2008–09 season. The Townsville Crocodiles were an Australian professional men's basketball team based in the North Queensland city of Townsville. They competed in the National Basketball League (NBL) and played their home games at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre. Between their inception in 1993 and their final season in 2015–16, the Crocodiles enjoyed financial stability and sustained community support, but on-court success eluded them.

The 2007–08 NBL season was the 30th season of competition since its establishment in 1979. On 21 November 2006, the Gold Coast Blaze joined the league, expanding it to 13 teams.
