The South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) was a semi-professional basketball league in Australia comprising both a men's and women's competition. The SEABL began in 1981 and operated for 38 seasons until it was disbanded in 2018. The league was closely linked with the Australian Basketball Association (ABA) and over the years, the SEABL boasted teams from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.

History

The SEABL was established in 1981 as a men's league. [1] [2] Separate South and East conferences were introduced in 1986. [1] In 1990, a women's competition was introduced. [3] The league was closely linked with the Australian Basketball Association (ABA) during the 1980s and 1990s. [4] [5] In 2012, the women's competition was divided into two conferences for the first time. [6]

In December 2014, Basketball Australia took over the operations of the SEABL. [3] Less than four years later, in August 2018, Basketball Australia disbanded the SEABL after they withdrew its support of the league and denied the proposal of a club-managed league. [7] [8] [9]

In October 2018, Basketball Victoria created a new senior elite league and later in partnership with the National Basketball League (NBL) produced the NBL1 which debuted in 2019. [10] [11] [12]

Shane McDonald is an Australian former professional basketball player. He had four stints in the National Basketball League (NBL) with the Singapore Slingers, Perth Wildcats, Melbourne Tigers and New Zealand Breakers. The majority of his career was spent in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) for the Nunawading Spectres, winning a championship in 2011 and league MVP honours in 2013. In his final season, he helped the Spectres win the 2019 NBL1 championship.

The NBL1 is a semi-professional basketball league in Australia run by the National Basketball League (NBL). The league consists of five conference: NBL1 South, NBL1 North, NBL1 Central, NBL1 West and NBL1 East, with each consisting of both men's and women's competitions. Each conference is run by their respective state governing body, with the league including 74 clubs from across every state and territory.

The 2019 NBL1 season was the inaugural season of the NBL1. The season began on 29 March and concluded on 17 August with grand final day for both the men's and women's seasons.

NBL1 South is a semi-professional basketball league in Victoria and Tasmania, Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2019, Basketball Victoria partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to create NBL1. NBL1 South was the lone conference in 2019, with North, Central, West and East joining over the proceeding three years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBL1 South did not have a season in 2020 and only half a season in 2021.
