Guajira is a music genre derived from the Punto cubano.
Orishas are a Cuban hip hop group from Havana, Cuba, founded in 1999. The group was first called "Amenaza", "threat" or "menace" in Spanish, and appealed to the Cuban youth who were hungry for African-American culture consisting of hip hop and rap. The group is based in France where they made a deal with a record company, although they visit Cuba frequently. In 1999 Fidel Castro threw a party for them and had a meeting with all the musicians. It was the first time the Cuban government showed support for hip hop music. The group was and still is popular in Europe and Latin America. Yotuel Romero and Ruzzo Medina, who moved from Havana to Paris as part of an international studies program, joined Roldán González and Flaco-Pro to form the band in 1999. Their work is influenced by the hip hop movement as well as Cuban and other Latin rhythms. As of October 2009, they had produced a total of five studio albums and a greatest hits album; their latest album is Gourmet. In 2009 they participated in the concert Paz Sin Fronteras II in Plaza de la Revolución, Havana, Cuba. Orishas reunited to record new material in 2016.
Hip hop music arrived in Cuba via radio and TV broadcasts from Miami. During the 1980s hip hop culture in Cuba was mainly centered on breakdancing. But by the 1990s, with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the onset of the Special Period, young raperos, exposed to foreign tourists whose wealth highlighted their struggle, turned to rapping to affirm their cubanidad and advocate for further revolutionary reforms.
The guaracha is a genre of music that originated in Cuba, of rapid tempo and comic or picaresque lyrics. The word had been used in this sense at least since the late 18th and early 19th century. Guarachas were played and sung in musical theatres and in low-class dance salons. They became an integral part of bufo comic theatre in the mid-19th century. During the later 19th and the early 20th century the guaracha was a favourite musical form in the brothels of Havana. The guaracha survives today in the repertoires of some trova musicians, conjuntos and Cuban-style big bands.
Plan B were a Puerto Rican reggaeton duo, consisting of Chencho and Maldy, who are co-working cousins. At an early age they had an attraction to Reggaeton music; all their efforts finally began to pay off when they met the famous music producer, DJ Blass, who gave them the opportunity to participate in a Reggaeton compilation album called @ria 51: Aliados Al Escuadron and released their first recording "Voy Subiendo" in 1999. At the time they were called "The Panic" until after their song "Plan B" from the album Reggaeton Sex Vol. 2 (2000), also produced by DJ Blass. They further continued their careers in the genre by participating in compilation and live albums from DJ Blass like Triple Sexxx (2001), Reggaeton Sex Live (2001), Sandunguero Vol. 1 (2001), and eventually Reggaeton Sex Crew (2002).
A Lo Cubano is the debut album by Orishas, a Cuban hip hop group. It was originally released on October 3, 2000 on the Universal Latino label.
Emigrante is the follow-up to the well-received début album, A Lo Cubano, by the Cuban hip hop band Orishas. The album was released on June 11, 2002, after Flaco-Pro left the band.
El Kilo is the third album by Orishas, a Cuban hip hop group based in France. It was released on March 29, 2005, on the Universal Latino Label.
Yotuel Omar Manzanarez Romero, mononymously known as Yotuel, is a Cuban singer, actor, and current lead singer and co-writer of the 2003 Latin Grammy Award-winning Platinum album-selling rap group Orishas. Among other recordings, Emigrante won the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album. This same album was also nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.
Edesio Alejandro Rodríguez Salva, born on March 28, 1958, is one of Cuba's most renowned composers of electronic music for films. He has composed music for theatre plays, TV, and movies; as well as several concert compositions. Many of them experimental, using synthesizers and mixing together actors, dancers, and musicians in unusual line-ups (1).
José María Vitier is a Cuban music composer and pianist. He has made music for movies and television, as well as compositions for piano, symphonic orchestra, chamber orchestra, among other formats. His style often combines the classical and Cuban folk music styles. Some of his most remarkable works are his compositions for the Cuban film Fresa y Chocolate, and his Cuban mass.
Adriano Buergo, is a Cuban artist specializing in painting, drawing and installations.
Eliseo Grenet Sánchez was a Cuban pianist and a leading composer/arranger of the day. He composed music for stage shows and films, and some famous Cuban dance music. Eliseo was one of three musical brothers, all composers, the others being Emilio and Ernesto (1908–1981). Emilio went on composing even after having a leg bitten off by a shark in 1930; Ernesto was a drummer who became leader of the Tropicana's orchestra.
Vive la Historia is a live album by Mexican pop singer Yuri. It was released in 2007. It sold more than 100,000 earning Gold and Platinum disc.
Yaudel Lahera García is a Cuban football striker, who currently plays for the Honduran side Marathón.
Bamboleo is a Havana-based Cuban salsa and timba band formed in 1995, and emblematic of the "timba brava" generation of Cuban bands in the 90s. Their albums also include boleros and reggaeton.
Mercedes Valdés Granit, better known as Merceditas Valdés, was a Cuban singer who specialized in Afro-Cuban traditional music. Under the aegis of ethnomusicologists Fernando Ortiz and Obdulio Morales, Valdés helped popularize Afro-Cuban music throughout Latin America. In 1949, she became one of the first female Santería singers to be recorded. Her debut album was released at the start of the 1960s, when the Cuban government nationalized the record industry. She then went on hiatus before making a comeback in the 1980s with a series of albums entitled Aché, in collaboration with artists such as Frank Emilio Flynn and rumba ensemble Yoruba Andabo. She also appeared in Jane Bunnett's Spirits of Havana and continued performing until her death in 1996.
