Antonius Jacobus Leonardus (Anton) van Hooff (born 1943) is a Dutch historian of antiquity, author and a former docent. [1] From 2009 until 2015, he chaired the freethinkers association De Vrije Gedachte. [2] [3]

In 1971, Van Hooff graduated with the dissertation Pax romana: een studie van het Romeinse imperialisme ("Pax Romana: a Study of Roman Imperialism"). Until 2008, Van Hooff was docent in ancient history at the Radboud University Nijmegen. [4] He specialises in classical antiquity, and regularly publishes in various newspapers and magazines. He wrote several books, including Nero & Seneca, [1] Athene ("Athens") and Marcus Aurelius. [4]

Van Hooff is an atheist, [5] a republican [1] [6] and a member of the Republican Society. [7] On 3 December 2014, Van Hooff held the first ever Hans van den Bergh Lecture of the New Republican Society in De Balie. [8]

André Demedts was a Belgian Flemish writer and teacher. He has published works in many genres, all in Dutch. In 1962 he received the Prijs voor Letterkunde van de Vlaamse Provincies for his work De levenden en de doden. In 1976 he received the award in honour of his life-time career. In 1990 he has received the Award "Driejaarlijkse Staatsprijs voor literatuur" to honour his career as a writer. In 1970 the award André Demedtsprijs was established to reward persons engaged in the cause of the large Dutch/Flemish cultural development with a main purpose to integrate and entangle cultural activities in the Netherlands, Flanders and South Africa.

<i>Non-believers: Freethinkers on the Run</i>

Non-believers: Freethinkers on the Run is a 2016 Dutch documentary on the situation of atheists, especially Muslim apostates, in Dutch refugee camps (AZCs). The film is directed by Dorothée Forma and produced by HUMAN with the support of the Dutch Humanist Association. It is the sequel of Among Nonbelievers (2015), which dealt with some of the situations of former Muslims.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dutch Athlete of the Year</span> Athletics award in the Netherlands

The Dutch Athlete of the Year is an annual award given to the most distinguished competitor in the sport of athletics from the Netherlands by the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation (KNAU). Erik Johan Anton (Erik) Scherder is a Dutch professor of neuropsychology who is connected to the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (VU). Scherder followed his education to physiotherapist in the late seventies after which he worked in the Valeriuskliniek in Amsterdam. Afterwards he followed the study psychology at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam with a specialization in neuropsychology, in which he promoted in 1995.

Anarchism in the Netherlands originated in the second half of the 19th century. Its roots lay in the radical and revolutionary ideologies of the labor movement, in anti-authoritarian socialism, the free thinkers and in numerous associations and organizations striving for a libertarian form of society. During the First World War, individuals and groups of syndicalists and anarchists of various currents worked together for conscientious objection and against government policies. The common resistance was directed against imperialism and militarism.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sienie Strikwerda</span> Dutch anti–nuclear weapons activist

Geesiena Jacoba "Sienie" Strikwerda was a Dutch educator, feminist, and anti–nuclear weapons activist. She served as chairperson of the Committee Cruise Missiles No, the national committee against nuclear cruise missiles. On 29 October 1983, the committee organised a demonstration of 550,000 people which was the largest demonstration in the history of the Netherlands. In 1985, she offered Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers, a petition with 3.7 million signatures. She served in the Provincial Council of North Holland between 1991 and 1995.
