Antonella Ferrara

Antonella Ferrara (born 1963) is an Italian control theorist and engineer, [1] known for her work on sliding mode control. [2]

Education and career

Ferrara is originally from Genoa, and studied electrical engineering at the University of Genoa, earning a laurea in 1987 and completing a Ph.D. in 1992. She became an assistant professor at the University of Genoa in 1992, and moved to the University of Pavia in 1998 as an associate professor. She was named professor of automatic control in 2005. At Pavia, she was originally affiliated with the department of computer engineering and systems science, and in 2011 became one of the founding members of a new department of electrical, computer, and biomedical engineering. [3]

Ferrara chaired the Women in Control Committee of the IEEE Control Systems Society from 2013 to 2016. [3]

Recognition

Ferrara was named an IEEE Fellow in 2020 "for contributions to sliding mode control theory". [4] She is also a Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control. [5]

He was a Fellow of the IEEE (1973) and a Fellow of the AAAS (1977). He was the recipient of numerous awards for his contributions in the field of control theory. A pioneer in the field of control theory, he helped shape modern control theory and spearheaded the field of multivariable control system design and the field of robust control. Athans was a member of the technical staff at Lincoln Laboratory from 1961 to 1964, and a Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science faculty member from 1964 to 1998. Upon retirement, Athans moved to Lisbon, Portugal, where he was an Invited Research Professor in the Institute for Systems and Robotics, Instituto Superior Técnico where he received a honoris causa doctorate from the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 2011.

Anders Gunnar Lindquist is a Swedish applied mathematician and control theorist. He has made contributions to the theory of partial realization, stochastic modeling, estimation and control, and moment problems in systems and control. In particular, he is known for the discovery of the fast filtering algorithms for (discrete-time) Kalman filtering in the early 1970s, and his seminal work on the separation principle of stochastic optimal control and, in collaborations with Giorgio Picci, the Geometric Theory for Stochastic Realization. Together with late Christopher I. Byrnes and Tryphon T. Georgiou, he is one of the founder of the so-called Byrnes-Georgiou-Lindquist school. They pioneered a new moment-based approach for the solution of control and estimation problems with complexity constraints.

Bruce Edward Hajek is a Professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Leonard C. and Mary Lou Hoeft Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. He does research in communication networking, auction theory, stochastic analysis, combinatorial optimization, machine learning, information theory, and bioinformatics.

Marija D. Ilić is a Serbian-American electrical engineer known for her work on the control and pricing of large electrical power systems. She is a professor emerita of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, a senior research scientist at the Laboratory for Information & Decision Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a senior staff member at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and the founding chief scientist of New Electricity Transmission Software in Massachusetts.

Maria Domenica Di Benedetto is an Italian electrical engineer and control theorist whose interests include the control of hybrid systems, embedded control systems, automotive engine control, and aerospace flight control. She is Professor of Automatic Control at the University of L'Aquila, president of the European Embedded Control Institute, and the former president of the Italian Society of researchers in Automatic Control.

Kirsten Anna Morris is a Canadian applied mathematician specializing in control theory, including work on flexible structures, smart materials, hysteresis, and infinite-dimensional optimization. She is a professor at the University of Waterloo, the former chair of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Control and Systems, the author of two books on control theory, and an IEEE Fellow.

Domitilla Del Vecchio is an Italian control theorist, whose research connects control theory to systems biology, synthetic biology, synthetic biological circuits, and regenerative medicine. She has also studied self-organization in traffic control. She is a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the MIT Synthetic Biology Center.
