Apollo Chamber Players is an American string quartet based in Houston, Texas. [1] The ensemble, composed of Violinist and Founder Matthew Detrick, Violinist Anabel Ramirez Detrick, Violist Whitney Bullock and Cellist Matthew Dudzik, [2] are known for their distinctive, globally-inspired programming [3] [4] [5] and have garnered international recognition for unique performances and a diverse catalog of commissioned works. In January 2017, they became the first American chamber music group to perform and record in the nation of Cuba since 1960. [6] The group has been featured on national broadcast radio on several occasions as part of American Public Media's Performance Today program. [7]

The ensemble's fifth studio album With Malice Toward None has been met with critical acclaim. James Manheim of AllMusic writes that the project is "a well-performed set of entirely novel chamber music". [8] Jon Sobel of Blogcritics calls the album a "varied yet thematically contiguous fusion of international traditions and modern innovation". [9]

Commissions

Composers commissioned by the Apollo Chamber Players include Libby Larsen, Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, Kimo Williams, N. Ravikiran, Pamela Z, Javier Farias, Vũ Nhật Tân, J.E. Hernández, Vanessa Vo, Jovino Santos Neto, Malek Jandali, Christopher Theofanidis and Jennifer Higdon among many others. [10] From 2014 to 2020 the ensemble commissioned new music as part of its 20x2020 project. [11] [12]

Andor John Toth was an American classical violinist, conductor and educator with a musical career spanning over six decades. Toth played his violin on the World War II battlefields of Aachen, Germany; performed with the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini in 1943 at age 18; and formed several chamber music ensembles, including the Oberlin String Quartet, the New Hungarian Quartet, and the Stanford String Quartet. For 15 years he was the violinist in the Alma Trio. Toth conducted orchestras in Cleveland, Denver and Houston. In 1969, he was the founding concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under Neville Marriner. Toth taught at five important colleges and universities, and recorded for Vox, Decca Records and Eclectra Records.

Bowman was Grammy-nominated in 2016 for his recording with the ARC Ensemble 'Chamber Works of Jerzy Fitelberg' on the Chandos label. Spektral Quartet is a string quartet based in Chicago comprising Clara Lyon (violin), Theo Espy (violin), Doyle Armbrust (viola) and Russell Rolen (cello). It is the ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago's Department of Music, where it has served since 2012.
