"Are You the One?" is the lead single by Australian electronic dance music duo The Presets, from their debut studio album Beams . The single backed with non-album tracks "Truth and Lies" and "Midnight Boundary", as well a remix of "Girl and the Sea" by Cut Copy [1] was released on 24 October 2005. The song peaked at No. 68 on the ARIA singles charts. [2]

The Presets are an Australian electronic music duo of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes. Formed in 2003 and signed to Modular Records, The Presets released two EPs in advance of their debut album, Beams, released in 2005 to positive critical response. After two years of touring, including as the Australian support for Daft Punk, the band's 2008 release, Apocalypso, debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart, and went on to win six awards at ARIA Awards 2008, including Album of the Year.

The UK version of the single (which appeared in early 2006) featured remixes by Simian Mobile Disco and Van She. [1] A remix of the song by French DJ, Lifelike, was commissioned in 2008 to feature in a BMW 1 Series commercial in Australia. [3]

Simian Mobile Disco are an English electronic music duo and production team, formed in 2003 by James Ford and Jas Shaw of the band Simian. Musically, they are known for their analogue production. Ford is also known for his production work.

Van She is an electropop band formed in 2002 in Sydney, Australia, with Matt Van Schie on bass guitar/vocals, Tomek Archer on drums/sequencer, Michael Di Francesco on synth/guitar and Nicholas Routledge on vocals/guitar. The band's debut album, V was released on the Australian label Modular Recordings in August 2008, which peaked at #10 on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) album charts. Their label introduced them as a "new band from Sydney fresh on ideas, fresher than Flavor Flav, fresh like coriander, fresher than the Fresh Prince, fresher than fresh eggs." Despite these claims, the band began with a sound very much rooted in the 1980s, heavy on synthesizer, although later material reflects a more textured sound. They also do remixes of other artists' work both under their own name and as the offshoot, Van She Technologic.

Reviews

A review on Sputnik Music describes the song as "absolutely fanstastic, the best on the album, and the catchiest." [4] Dan Raper at Popmatters states "the beat is a semitone-rumble of distorted fuzz, the vocals, thrown off with the yelp of Green Velvet in “La La Land”, and the chorus is anthemic, defiant, addictive." [5] Marc Hogan at Pitchfork Media however states that it is tuneless and "all hoovering bass and forgettable lyrics". [6]

Music video

The music video, which was directed by Moyes, [7] was nominated for 'Best Video' at the 2006 ARIA Music Awards. [8]

The 20th annual Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards were held on 29 October 2006 at the Acer Arena at the Sydney Olympic Park complex. Presenters on the night included James Mathison, Johnny Knoxville, Jesse McCartney and John Mayer.

Julian Thomas Hamilton is an Australian singer-songwriter and keyboardist, who, with band mate Kim Moyes, formed the electronica duo, The Presets in 2003. They have issued four studio albums, Beams, Apocalypso, Pacifica, and Hi Viz. Both were previously members of another electronic group, Prop, which released two albums, Small Craft Rough Sea (2001) and Cook Cut Damage Destroy. Hamilton has also worked as a session and touring member of Silverchair (2001–2003) and The Dissociatives (2004). At the APRA Music Awards of 2008 Hamilton and Daniel Johns won Song of the Year and Most Played Australian Work for Silverchair's single, "Straight Lines". In 2009 Hamilton and Moyes won Songwriters of the Year for their work on Apocalypso for The Presets.

Kim Moyes Australian musician

Kimberley Isaac Moyes is an Australian musician, producer, DJ and one half of the Sydney-based electronica duo, The Presets. Moyes provides synthesizers and drums, as well as engineering, production and songwriting. The Presets have released two EPs and four full-length albums. Moyes also records and performs as a solo artist under the aliases K.I.M, KIM and alongside Melbourne veteran DJ Mike Callander as one half of Zero Percent

Samuel Dixon is a record producer, songwriter and musician, based in London. Dixon has produced and written with artists including Adele, Sia, Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera, Paloma Faith and Jack Savoretti. He is a multi-instrumentalist, best known for his work as a bass guitarist.
