The Armdale Yacht Club is a yacht club located on Melville Island, at the head of Halifax Harbour's Northwest Arm in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Club was founded in 1937 and was established at its current location in 1947. The Club is known for founding the Bluenose fleet. [1]

Melville Island

The land was officially named Melville Island in late 1804 or early 1805 in honour of prominent abolitionist Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (who at the time had just been appointed First Lord of the Admiralty). [2]

Sir Admiral John Borlase Warren and Captain John MacKellar erected the officers’ quarters, the current Club House, in 1808 when he was commander-in-chief on the North American Station from 1807 to 1810. [3] [4]

Beginning in 1808, during the Napoleonic Wars prisoners were kept on site. The War of 1812 brought an influx of American prisoners to Melville Island; up to 1800 at a time were housed in its barracks or on a nearby 350-person prison ship Magnet. Most of the French prisoners were released or paroled to make room for the Americans, who were seen as more of a risk. The most famous prisoners were the 320 American survivors of the capture of USS Chesapeake in 1813 who were interned on Melville Island. [5]

After the decommissioning of the military prison, Melville Island was used as a receiving depot for 727 of the black refugees, the estimated 1600–2000 escaped slaves who arrived in Halifax between 1815 and 1818. [6]

The Irish Famine led 1,200 Irish to flee to Halifax from May to October 1847. They quarantined at Melville Island, where 203 Irish patients were admitted to hospital and 30 died. [7]

In 1855, Nova Scotia politician Joseph Howe developed a plan to use Melville Island as a recruitment and training centre for American soldiers to fight for the British Foreign Legion in the Crimean War. Written when he was age 17, Howe's first poem was entitled Melville Island (1821). [8] [9]

Author of the Last of the Mohicans, James Fenimore Cooper, briefly used Melville Island as the setting for his book Ned Myers: Life Before the Mast (1843). [10]

Bluenose fleet

In the 1940s, William James Roué produced a design, at the request of a group from the Armdale Yacht Club, for a small one-design sloop that would be both fast and elegant and could be sailed easily by two or three people. The schooner Bluenose was still afloat, but had been sold to the West Indian Trading Company for use as a freighter. The new class was given the name Bluenose to help perpetuate the memory of the great champion. Months after Bluenose was lost on a Haitian reef, the first Bluenose class sloops were launched in the spring of 1946. [12]

The first twelve bluenose sloops were constructed at the same time together by their first owners under the direction of master boatbuilder John H. Barkhouse, of Barkhouse Boatyard in Chester, Nova Scotia. Many of these original twelve boats are still actively sailed or even raced. B1 was allowed to fall into a state of disrepair, but has since been restored and is on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. [13]

These first boats were carvel-built of pine planking on oak frames. Production was brisk in the early years, with as many as fifty boats built by 1949. [14] Other local builders in Nova Scotia also built the design, with 77 wooden versions eventually completed. [15]

In the early 1900s the site became an amusement park before being annexed to the city of Halifax in the 1960s. Though development projects were considered for the site, these plans met with popular protest, and instead Deadman's Island became a heritage park, Deadman's Island Park.

William James Roué was a naval architect famous for his design of the fishing schooner Bluenose, which sailed to victory in the Halifax Herald International Fisherman's competition in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1931 and 1938, and held the record for the largest catch of fish ever brought into Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Capture of the <i>Young Teazer</i>

Young Teazer was a United States privateer schooner that captured 12 British vessels, five of which made it to American ports. A member of her crew blew her up at Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia during the War of 1812 after a series of British warships chased her and after HMS Hogue trapped her. The schooner became famous for this deadly explosion, which killed most of her crew, and for the folklore about the ghostly "Teazer Light."

Archibald Hinshelwood was a lawyer, merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He briefly sat on the 1st General Assembly of Nova Scotia in April 1759, but his election was disputed. He was a member of subsequent assemblies from 1759 to 1773, representing Lunenburg County from 1761 to 1765 and from 1770 to 1773, and Lunenburg Township from 1765 to 1770. His name also appears as Hinchelwood.

John Flinn was a merchant, contractor and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Halifax County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1871 to 1874 as a Liberal member.

Nathan Utley was an American-born sailor and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Yarmouth Township in the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1799 to 1804.

Henry Goudge was a merchant, ship builder and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Hants County from 1836 to 1840 and Windsor township from 1840 to 1841 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Reformer.

Nova Scotia is a Canadian province located in Canada's Maritimes. The region was initially occupied by Mi'kmaq. The colonial history of Nova Scotia includes the present-day Maritime Provinces and the northern part of Maine, all of which were at one time part of Nova Scotia. In 1763, Cape Breton Island and St. John's Island became part of Nova Scotia. In 1769, St. John's Island became a separate colony. Nova Scotia included present-day New Brunswick until that province was established in 1784. During the first 150 years of European settlement, the colony was primarily made up of Catholic Acadians, Maliseet, and Mi'kmaq. During the last 75 years of this time period, there were six colonial wars that took place in Nova Scotia. After agreeing to several peace treaties, the long period of warfare ended with the Halifax Treaties (1761) and two years later, when the British defeated the French in North America (1763). During those wars, the Acadians, Mi'kmaq and Maliseet from the region fought to protect the border of Acadia from New England. They fought the war on two fronts: the southern border of Acadia, which New France defined as the Kennebec River in southern Maine, and in Nova Scotia, which involved preventing New Englanders from taking the capital of Acadia, Port Royal and establishing themselves at Canso.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Royal Nova Scotia Regiment</span> Military unit

The Royal Nova Scotia Regiment was a battalion of infantry raised in 1793 to defend British interests in the colony of Nova Scotia during the Wars of the French Revolution. The unit was commanded by Colonel John Wentworth, the lieutenant-governor of the colony, throughout its existence. The Royal Nova Scotia Regiment (RNSR) had an undistinguished history through most of its existence, and saw very limited action, mostly in the role of marines, but did play an important role in the defense of Nova Scotia during these wars.

Chester Yacht Club (CYC) is a private yacht club located in Chester, Nova Scotia, Canada, established in 1902. The Chester Yacht Club is home to Canada's largest keelboat regatta, Chester Race Week, which occurs every August. Notable members of the Chester Yacht Club include Olympians Jacob Saunders and Graeme Saunders, who started sailing with the club's junior sailing school in 2002, and philanthropist Sir Christopher Ondaatje, who owns a nearby island. The club is also active in one-design racing, highlighted by the Bluenose one-design sloop and International One Design (IOD) fleet.
