Arnel Roa Mandal is a Filipino wushu athlete specializing in sanda. He has won multiple medals in both local and international levels of competition. [1]
Mandal is an Iloilo native and sanda athlete who has fought and achieved medals in local, international, and world championship levels of competition. Specifically, he earned gold and silver medals in the 13th, 14th, and 15th World Wushu Championships [2] and the 8th and 9th Sanda World Cups. When a wushu sanda competitor places highly in the wushu world championships, they are invited to compete in the sanda world cup against other top-placing athletes. [3] Furthermore, he has won gold medals in the 1st Asian Cup and the 30th and 31st SEA Games. [4] Due to a regulation change regarding the age of a fighter, he was ineligible to compete in the 32nd SEA games. [5]
For his achievements, he was rewarded with "The Pride of Iloilo Award" by SM City Iloilo. He encourages the youths of his home province to try out wushu. [6]
Wushu, or Kung fu, is a hard and soft and complete martial art, as well as a full-contact combat sport. It has a long history in reference to Chinese martial arts. It was developed in 1949 in an effort to standardize the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts, yet attempts to structure the various decentralized martial arts traditions date back earlier, when the Central Guoshu Institute was established at Nanking in 1928.
The World Wushu Championships (WWC) is an international sports championship hosted by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) for the sports of wushu taolu and sanda (sanshou). It has been held biennially since 1991 and is the pinnacle event of the IWUF. The World Wushu Championships also coincides with the IWUF Congress as well as with various committee meetings. This competition additionally serves as the qualification event for the Taolu World Cup and the Sanda World Cup.
This year's Philippine contingent at the 26th Southeast Asian Games consists of 512 athletes and 140 officials which is higher than the proposed contingent. The Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP) is the official national governing body for Wushu in the Philippines under the International Wushu Federation. The WFP is a regular member of Philippine Olympic Committee as NSA or National Sports Association.
The Philippines participated at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia from 18 August to 2 September 2018. The country won 21 medals to finish 19th overall in the medal tally of the games; an improvement from 22nd place placement of the country in the previous 2014 edition.
