Kukës is a city in the Republic of Albania. The city is the capital of the surrounding municipality of Kukës and county of Kukës, one of 12 constituent counties of the republic. It spans 8.2 square kilometres (3.2 sq mi) and had a total population of 16,719 people as of 2011. By air distance, Kukës is located 98 kilometres (61 mi) northeast of Tirana, 75 kilometres (47 mi) to the east of Shkodër and 34 kilometres (21 mi) to the south of Gjakovë and 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the west of Prizren in Kosovo.
Kukës District was one of the 36 districts of Albania, which were dissolved in July 2000 and replaced by 12 counties. It had a population of 64,054 in 2001, and an area of 956 km2 (369 sq mi). The town of Kukës was where the district's administrative headquarters were located. The area of the former district is coextensive with the present municipality of Kukës, which is part of Kukës County.
Kukës County is a landlocked county in northeastern Albania, with the capital in Kukës. The county spans 2,374 square kilometres (917 sq mi) and had a total population of 74,388 people as of 2021. The county borders on the counties of Dibër, Lezhë and Shkodër and the countries of Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia. It is divided into three municipalities, including Has, Kukës and Tropojë. The municipalities are further subdivided into 290 towns and villages in total.
