Artesa Vineyards & Winery (formerly known as Codorniu Napa^[1]) is a winery located in Napa, California in the United States.

A winery is a building or property that produces wine, or a business involved in the production of wine, such as a wine company. Some wine companies own many wineries. Besides wine making equipment, larger wineries may also feature warehouses, bottling lines, laboratories, and large expanses of tanks known as tank farms. Wineries may have existed as long as 8,000 years ago.

Napa is the largest city and the county seat of Napa County, in California's Wine Country. It is the principal city of the Napa County Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 80,011 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in California's Wine Country, after Santa Rosa. Napa was incorporated as a city in 1872.

History

Artesa was originally known as Codorniu Napa. The winery was founded by the Spanish company Grupo Codorníu in 1991, investing $30 million in the facility. Codorniu Napa made sparkling wine. Lack of demand for sparkling wine led to poor sales, and the winery shifted to make still wines. Don Van Staaveren became winemaker. The company invested $20 million for a new winery and new vineyard acquisitions and Dave Dobson became Vice President of Production and Winemaking.^[4]

Codorníu is the oldest and second-largest producer of Cava, the Spanish traditional method sparkling wine. It was founded in Barcelona, Spain in 1551.

Sparkling wine is a wine with significant levels of carbon dioxide in it, making it fizzy. While the phrase commonly refers to champagne, EU countries legally reserve that term for products exclusively produced in the Champagne region of France. Sparkling wine is usually either white or rosé, but there are examples of red sparkling wines such as the Italian Brachetto, Bonarda and Lambrusco, Australian sparkling Shiraz, and Azerbaijani "Pearl of Azerbaijan" made from Madrasa grapes. The sweetness of sparkling wine can range from very dry brut styles to sweeter doux varieties.

Artesa Winery opened in 1997^[4] and is located on a hilltop in the Carneros AVA area of Napa County.^[1] That same year, Artesa purchased a Sonoma Coast AVA property for $1.7 million. The property, which comprised 324-acres, was set to be developed into Pinot Noir vineyards, upon the removal of redwood trees. The change was protested by environmentalists and in 2014 Artesa announced it would sell the property.^[3] Artesa's first wines were released in 1999.^[5]

A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. It often has a distinct summit, although in areas with scarp/dip topography a hill may refer to a particular section of flat terrain without a massive summit.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is an American Viticultural Area in Sonoma County, California, United States containing more than 500,000 acres (2,000 km²), mostly along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. It extends from San Pablo Bay to the border with Mendocino County. The appellation is known for its cool climate and high rainfall relative to other parts of Sonoma County. The area has such a broad range of microclimates that petitions have been made to the United States Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for the creation of sub-AVAs such as the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA which was approved in December 2011.

Mark Beringer became Vice President of Production and Winemaking in 2009, replacing Dave Dobson.^[4] He left in 2015, and Assistant Winemaker, Ana Diego-Draper was promoted to take over as Director of Winemaking.^[4]

Wines

Artesa's estate vineyards are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They also cultivate grapes in Atlas Peak AVA. The winery focuses on Pinot Noir and a small amount of sparkling wine is produced (1,000 cases).^[4] The winery produces between 60,000 and 80,000 cases of wine annually.^[4]

Chardonnay is a green-skinned grape variety used in the production of white wine. The variety originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France, but is now grown wherever wine is produced, from England to New Zealand. For new and developing wine regions, growing Chardonnay is seen as a "rite of passage" and an easy entry into the international wine market.

The Atlas Peak AVA is an American Viticultural Area located within Napa Valley AVA just northeast of the city of Napa. The appellation sits on a higher elevation than most of Napa's wine region which limits the effects of the cool fog coming in from Pacific Ocean. The westward orientation of most vineyards on the Vaca Mountains also extends the amount of direct sunlight on the grapes. The soil of this AVA is volcanic and very porous which allows it to cool down quickly despite the increased sunlight. The area has a fairly significant diurnal temperature variation upwards of 30 °F (17 °C) between daytime and night. This contributes to the balance of acidity that grapes from Atlas Peak vineyards are known to have.

The History of American wine began when the first Europeans explored parts of North America, which they called Vinland because of the profusion of grape vines found there. However, settlers would later discover that the wine made from the various native grapes, had flavors which were unfamiliar and which they did not like. Kenwood, Vineyards is a winery in Kenwood, California, located on Highway 12 in the Sonoma Valley wine country. It is currently owned by Pernod Ricard Winemakers.

Jean-Charles Boisset is a French vintner and the proprietor of the Boisset Collection. Under Boisset's leadership, the Boisset Collection operates 24 wineries in California, France, and Canada.
