Arthur Chesterfield-Evans (born 16 June 1950) is an Australian medical practitioner and politician who served as a member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales from 1998 to 2007.
Graduated MB BS Sydney,1975;FRCS (Eng) London,1980 and MAppSc (OHS) University of NSW,1996. Formerly surgical registrar,Royal North Shore Hospital,1980–81;general practitioner in Sydney 1982 -3;occupational physician,Sydney Water,1983–1994;postgraduate student (Masters by thesis) 1994;medical officer,Department of Veteran Affairs,1995;occupational physician,self-employed,at Pacific OHS,Burwood 1995–8. [1] In 1994 he served as NSW President of the Doctors Reform Society of Australia,through which he argued for the continuation of Medicare and improvements to the public health system.
Chesterfield-Evans was president of the Non-Smokers Movement from 1984 to 1997 and a member of Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions (BUGA UP),which vandalised tobacco-advertising billboards with satirical graffiti. He was arrested and convicted over these activities but had his sentence remitted on appeal. [2] He hosted an anti-tobacco radio program,Puff Off,from 1980 to 1994 [1] and in 1988 the Drug and Alcohol Unit of TAFE produced an award-winning film of his activities,Confessions of a Simple Surgeon. [3] He has also served on the Board of NADA (Network of Alcohol and Drug Agencies). [4]
Chesterfield-Evans has been a leading Australian advocate for the establishment of a ministry or department of peace in Australia.[ citation needed ] The argument for the establishment of a ministry or department of peace from Chesterfield-Evans was that such a ministry or department would advocate for the implementation of peace-active policies,both at domestic and international level,and act as a counter to the institutionalised power of violence. [5] Just as we now recognise ministries or departments of environment in the formulation of public policy,so too we need ministries or departments of peace. [5] Chesterfield-Evans spoke as an Australian delegate at the World Peace Forum in Canada in 2006[ citation needed ] and also at Social Issues Forums with the Centre for Peace and Social Justice of Southern Cross University in the same year. Chesterfield-Evans joined the Australian Democrats in 1986 and was appointed to replace Elisabeth Kirkby in the New South Wales Legislative Council on her retirement on 25 June 1998. He was re-elected for an 8-year term in 1999 and was defeated at the 2007 election,achieving 1.8% of the primary vote,leaving the Democrats unrepresented in the NSW Parliament. As a parliamentarian,he was well known among journalists for his fashion sense,including a liking for yellow shirts. [7]
With the eventual diminishment of the Australian Democrats,Chesterfield-Evans defected to the Greens and at the 2015 New South Wales election made an attempt to return to the NSW Parliament this time as the Greens candidate for the Legislative Assembly seat of North Shore but was unsuccessful. [8] He was the Greens candidate for the 2015 North Sydney by-election which was triggered by the resignation of Joe Hockey,however he lost to Liberal candidate Trent Zimmerman. [9]
He is married to Kate, [1] and they have a son,Mike.

Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement,both of which were descended from Liberal Party dissenting splinter groups,it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time.
Frederick John Nile,ED is an Australian politician and ordained Christian minister. Nile has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 1981,except for a period in 2004. Nile was re-elected at the March 2007 state election and served as the Assistant President of the Legislative Council until 25 February 2019.
The Christian Democratic Party (CDP) was a Christian democratic political party in Australia,founded in 1977 under the name Call to Australia Party by a group of Christian ministers in New South Wales,who had Fred Nile,a Congregational Church minister,run as their upper house candidate in the NSW State election. The Christian Democratic Party's platform espoused social conservatism. The party changed its name in 1998. It was primarily active in New South Wales,and since the 1981 NSW state election has had at least one member in that state's Legislative Council,often holding or sharing the balance of power. The Christian Democrats never succeeded in having a member elected to federal parliament,although John Bradford briefly sat with the party in the House of Representatives after defecting from the Liberal Party before the 1998 federal election.
Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions,or B.U.G.A.U.P. is an Australian subvertising artistic movement. It practices billboard hijacking using détournement or modification with graffiti of such billboard advertising that promotes something that is deemed unhealthy.
The Unity Party was a small multiculturist party in Australia,formed in 1997 and primarily active in the state of New South Wales. It was formed with the aim of opposing the rise of the controversial anti-immigration politician Pauline Hanson. Although initially billed as a party to unite Australians of all ethnicities against racism,Unity failed to draw significant support outside Australia's East Asian ethnic communities. After the demise of Pauline Hanson as a political force,Unity has accordingly shifted its focus onto ethnic community affairs at a local government level.
The Greens New South Wales,commonly known as Greens NSW,is a green political party in New South Wales and a member of the Australian Greens. First formed in 1991,the Greens NSW began as a state-level party before joining with other green parties in Australia to create the current federated structure.
Marrickville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It was an urban electorate in Sydney's inner west,centred on the suburb of Marrickville from which it took its name. Lee Rhiannon is a former Australian politician who was a Senator for New South Wales between July 2011 and August 2018. She was elected at the 2010 federal election,representing the Australian Greens. Prior to her election to the Federal Parliament,Rhiannon was a Greens NSW member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1999 and 2010.
Ian Cohen is a former Australian politician and member of the Greens New South Wales. Cohen was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1995 as its first Green member. He retired from parliament in 2011.

Donald Thomas Harwin is an Australian politician. He was the New South Wales Special Minister of State and the Minister for the Public Service and Employee Relations,Aboriginal Affairs,and the Arts in the second Berejiklian ministry since April 2019;and the Vice-President of the Executive Council,and the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council since January 2017 in the Berejiklian government. He briefly resigned from his roles with effect from 15 April 2020,however was reinstated on 3 July 2020.
Elections to the 55th Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday,26 March 2011. The 16-year-incumbent Labor Party government led by Premier Kristina Keneally was defeated in a landslide by the Liberal–National Coalition opposition led by Barry O'Farrell. Labor suffered a two-party swing of 16.4 points,the largest against a sitting government at any level in Australia since World War II. From 48 seats at dissolution,Labor was knocked down to 20 seats—the worst defeat of a sitting government in New South Wales history,and one of the worst of a state government in Australia since federation. The Coalition picked up a 34-seat swing to win a strong majority,with 69 seats–the largest majority government,in terms of percentage of seats controlled,in NSW history. It is only the third time since 1941 that a NSW Labor government has been defeated.
Cate Faehrmann is an Australian politician and environmental activist. Faehrmann was a Greens member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2011 to 2013. She resigned from the Legislative Council in June 2013 to stand for the Senate at the federal election of the same year and was unsuccessful in obtaining a seat. She worked in the office of the Leader of the Australian Greens,Richard Di Natale,as his chief of staff from May 2015 - March 2018. In August 2018 she was re-elected to the Legislative Council to fill the casual vacancy caused by the resignation of Mehreen Faruqi,who had replaced Lee Rhiannon in the Australian Senate.
David Martin Shoebridge is an Australian politician and former barrister. He is a member of the Australian Greens and was elected to the Senate as the party's lead candidate in New South Wales at the 2022 federal election,to a term beginning on 1 July 2022. He previously served in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2010 to 2022 and on the Woollahra Municipal Council from 2004 to 2012.
Jeremy Nova Buckingham is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2011 to 2019. He was a Greens member from 2011 to 2018,but resigned from the party on 20 December 2018. He was unsuccessful in retaining his seat in the Legislative Council in the 2019 state election.
A general election for the 56th Parliament of New South Wales (NSW) was held on Saturday 28 March 2015. Members were elected to all 93 seats in the Legislative Assembly using optional preferential voting. Members were also elected to 21 of the 42 seats in the Legislative Council using optional preferential proportional representation voting. The election was conducted by the New South Wales Electoral Commission.
Benjamin Cameron Franklin is an Australian politician. He served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from March 2015 until March 2019,representing the National Party. He resigned in 2019 to contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Ballina,but was defeated by the incumbent Greens MP Tamara Smith. He was subsequently appointed in May 2019 to fill the casual vacancy caused by his own resignation. Franklin has served as the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs,the Minister for the Arts,and the Minister for Regional Youth in the Perrottet ministry since December 2021.
The 2019 New South Wales state election was held on Saturday 23 March 2019 to elect the 57th Parliament of New South Wales,including all 93 seats in the Legislative Assembly and 21 of the 42 seats in the Legislative Council. The election was conducted by the New South Wales Electoral Commission (NSWEC).
