Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduate. The main administrative block was gutted by fire in September 2020 and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Banda is a hill that lies in Nakawa Division, within Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Banda also refers to the neighborhoods on the slopes of the hill and between Banda Hill and Kireka, extending all the way to the Kampala-Jinja Highway. The southwestern slopes of the hill are occupied by the neighbourhood known as Kyambogo, and is the location of the campus of Kyambogo University, one of the nine public universities in the country.
John Pancras Mukasa Lubowa Ssebuwufu, commonly known as John Ssebuwufu is a Ugandan chemist, academic and administrator. He is the current chancellor of Kyambogo University, Uganda's second-largest public university. He was installed as chancellor on 19 February 2014, replacing Eric Tiyo Adriko, who had completed his two term tenure. The correct spelling of his last name is Ssebuwufu. However the literature contains many instances where the name is spelled with a single "s".

Mary Jossy Nakhanda Okwakol is a Ugandan university professor, academic administrator, zoologist and community leader. She is the current Chairperson of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
Stephen Robert Isabalija, is a Ugandan civil servant, management professional, accountant, academic and academic administrator. He is the immediate past permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in Uganda, having served in that capacity from November 2016, until his termination on 24 August 2017.
Hannington Sengendo is a Ugandan academic, urban planner and academic administrator. Currently, he is the Vice Chancellor of Nkumba University, a private University in Uganda, which was accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE), in 1999. He was installed in that position on Friday 21 June 2013.
Professor Eriabu Lugujjo is an electrical engineer, academic and academic administrator. He is the current Vice Chancellor of Ndejje University, a private Christian university, which was licensed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE), in 1992. He was appointed to that position in July 2012.
Frederick Ian Bantubano Kayanja is a Ugandan veterinarian, academic, and academic administrator. He has been the chancellor of Gulu University, a public institution of higher education, since October 2014, replacing Martin Aliker. He is a former vice chancellor of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He assumed that position in 1989 and stepped down in October 2014. Before that, he served as the deputy vice chancellor of Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda.
Pamela Kasabiiti Mbabazi is a Ugandan university professor, academic, and academic administrator, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the National Planning Authority of Uganda. She was installed in that position in April 2019, to serve a five-year term, renewable one time.

He left the position to join the presidential race in Uganda to take place in 2016. Before that, he served as the vice chancellor of Makerere University from November 2009 until August 2012.

Aaron Mushengyezi, is a Ugandan educator and academic administrator, who serves as the Vice Chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU), effective August 2020. Prior to his current position, he served as the Dean of the School of Languages, Literature and Communication at Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda.
