Artists For World Peace (AFWP) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit grassroots organization based in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. It is a community of artists and activists working to feed the hungry, house the poor, and encourage peace throughout the world.

History

Since 2003, Artists For World Peace has organized numerous events and performances to raise money for their ongoing efforts with the International Peace Belt and humanitarian efforts in Tanzania, Brazil, Haiti and locally in Connecticut. Wendy Black Nasta serves as the executive director, she is also the founder of AFWP.

AFWP's governing board is composed of Wendy Black Nasta as the President, Jennifer Lia as Treasurer, Jane Bance Homick as Secretary and an advisory Council of Elders.[ citation needed ]

Performance events

Artists For World Peace has created a curated a number of performances.

AFWP on Broadway is an annual event held in New York, New York. Broadway performers from various shows come together for one night every year to raise money for the humanitarian projects that Artists For World Peace produces.

In 2011, the first AFWP on Broadway was held on November 6, at the Helen Mills Theater in New York City. [1]

In 2012, AFWP on Broadway 2 was accompanied with a silent auction, and a display of four works painted by the Fashion Institute of Technology's delegation to Art Basel Miami make up the backdrop of the stage.[ citation needed ] The participating artists worked in paris: Melissa Starke & Garrett Klein, Eric Gottshall & Lydia Maria Pfeffer, Kenneth Park & Slavko Djuric, and Valentina Burzanovic & Jennifer L. Torres. The Broadway performers for the evening were; Deanna Aguinaga, Stephen Carrasco, Andrew Chappelle, Adrienne Jean Fisher, Andrea Goss, Monica Kapoor, Raymond J. Lee, Carrie Manolakos, Marissa McGowan, Paul HeeSang Miller, Ryann Redmon, Sharone Sayegh, L. Steven Taylor, Traci Victoria, Blake Whyte, Alex Wyse, and Leah Zepel. [2]

The 2013 AFWP on Broadway 3 was held on October 13, at New York City's 54 Below. Among the performing artists was singer/actress Allison Strong. [3]

The 2014 AFWP on Broadway 4 was held on October 5 at New York City's Joe's Pub at the public theater.[ citation needed ]

The 2015 AFWP on Broadway 5 was held on October 11, at New York City's Joe's Pub at the acclaimed public theater. [4]

Relief efforts

Children of Peace is a program established by AFWP to pay for the living and educational expenses of children all over the world. This initiative supports kids in China, Haiti, India, and Tanzania. Under the Children of Peace umbrella, they have also helped Haitian students travel to Brazil, where they are pursuing higher education unavailable in their home country. The children in the program from Kibosho, Tanzania attend the Mlama Secondary School in Kibosho Umbwe. The other children attend the Moshi Academy in Moshi. [5]

Peace Pig Club is a partnership with the Good Hope Trust in Kibosho Umbwe, Tanzania. The objective of the project is to provide animal protein to the center community, and to raise income to support the cost of running the center. The project is located at the orphanage centre at Kibosho Umbew, Onana Village, Moshi District, Kilimanjaro region. It is a way for the community to become self-sufficient.[ citation needed ]

In 2012 AFWP also raised the funds to support the Community Health Center in Kibosho Umbwe.[ citation needed ]

In the past AFWP created the Santa Clara Scholarship Endowment Fund, created a safe house for women and children in Cambodia, delivered 500 pairs of shoes up the Amazon waterway to the indigenous Shuar children in Ecuador, and assisted in the building of the Amazon Refuge School.[ citation needed ]

Scholarships

AFWP delivers art scholarships to students attending Middlesex Community College in Middletown, Connecticut.[ citation needed ]

The Theatre World Award is an American honor presented annually to actors and actresses in recognition of an outstanding New York City stage debut performance, either on Broadway or Off-Broadway. It was first awarded for the 1945–1946 theatre season.

Shaun Taylor-Corbett American actor, singer, and writer

Shaun Michael Taylor-Corbett is an American actor, singer and writer. He is the son of choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett and Music Executive Michael Corbett. Taylor-Corbett is of Native American descent and has three sisters.

Melissa Errico is an American actress, singer, recording artist and writer. She is known for her Broadway musical roles such as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, and Kurt Weill's One Touch of Venus, as well as her recordings of musical theater classics, including albums of songs by Stephen Sondheim and Michel Legrand. In recent years she has also become a contributing writer to The New York Times.

Julie Halston American actress and comedian

Julie Halston is an American actress and comedian. She was born in Flushing, Queens. Her parents, Rudolph “Rudy” Abatelli and her mother Julia Madeline “Dolly” moved to Commack, Long Island when Halston was four years of age. Halston graduated from Hofstra University cum laude with a B.A. in Theatre Arts.

The New York Musical Festival (NYMF) was an annual three-week summer festival which presented more than thirty new musicals at venues in New York City's midtown theater district. More than half of these productions are chosen by leading theater artists and producers through an open-submission, double-blind evaluation process; the remaining shows are invited to participate by the Festival's artistic staff. There were sixteen iterations of NYMF in total, one every year from 2004 to 2019.

Aaron Tveit American actor and singer

Aaron Kyle Tveit is an American actor and singer. He is known for originating the musical theatre roles of Gabe in Next to Normal, Frank Abagnale Jr. in the stage musical version of Catch Me If You Can, and the role of Christian in Moulin Rouge! on Broadway, for which he received a 2020 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and a 2020 Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album, as well as for his portrayal of Enjolras in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables. Chester Gregory, also known as CHΞSS, is an American actor, singer and songwriter from Gary, Indiana. His breakthrough came with his portrayal of Jackie Wilson in The Jackie Wilson Story, which led to his Broadway debut as Seaweed in Hairspray. Gregory's other credits include principal roles in Tarzan, Cry-Baby, Dreamgirls and Sister Act. Gregory produced and starred in a look into the life of Jackie Wilson in The Eve of Jackie. Gregory has received numerous awards including the Joseph Jefferson and NAACP Theatre Award.

Teal Wicks American singer and stage actress (born 1982)

Teal Wicks is an American singer and stage actress, who is best known for her performances as Elphaba in the Broadway, San Francisco, and Los Angeles productions of the musical Wicked and as Mary Barrie in the musical Finding Neverland.

Alex Wyse is an American stage and screen actor, writer, director, and producer. He is best known for playing Kyle in Marvel's Iron Fist, Saul Feinberg in The Bold and the Beautiful, Georg Zirschnitz in the 2015 Deaf West Broadway revival of Spring Awakening, and co-creating the digital series Indoor Boys.

Michael J. Moritz Jr.

Michael J. Moritz Jr. is a Tony Award winner, an Emmy Award winner, American theatrical producer, record producer, music supervisor, music director, arranger, Broadway music supervisor, performer and pianist. Michael's work as a pianist, music director and arranger is featured on many recordings in the pop and musical theatre genres. Michael is on the Board of Directors for The Angel Band Project.

Oslo is a Tony award-winning play by J. T. Rogers, recounting the true-life, previously secret, back-channel negotiations in the development of the pivotal 1990s Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The play premiered Off-Broadway in June 2016 and then transferred to Broadway in April 2017.

<i>Stars in the House</i>

Stars in the House is a daily live streamed web series created and hosted by Seth Rudetsky and his husband James Wesley to support The Actors Fund and its services. Created in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Stars in the House debuted in March 2020.
