Aruna Suresh (born 19 February 1950) is a former judge of the Orissa High Court in India. [1] She also served at the Delhi High Court. [2] She gained public attention after an association of lawyers boycotted her courtroom in Odisha,following her request to a senior counsel to refrain from intervening in a case where he was not involved. [3]
Suresh qualified into the Delhi Judicial Service in 1973,and initially served in the lower judiciary in Delhi in several capacities,including subordinate civil judge,metropolitan magistrate,insolvency judge,judge of the small causes court,and rent controller. Between 1987 and 1991,she was also the secretary for legal aid services in the district courts in Delhi. [1] [2]
In 1991,Suresh joined the Delhi Higher Judicial Service. She worked as a district and sessions judge,and also served as a special judge for cases prosecuted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,for cases investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation,and a sessions judge in the Mahila Adalat (Women's Court). In addition to hearing criminal cases,Suresh worked as an additional district judge,hearing civil cases. In 2006,she was appointed the chief district and sessions judge for Delhi. [1] [2]
Suresh was appointed to the Delhi High Court on 4 July 2006 as an additional judge,and was confirmed as a permanent judge on 11 February 2008. [2] In 2009,Suresh,along with another judge,Pradeep Nandrajog,acquitted an army officer who had been accused of murdering a businessman by mailing him a parcel bomb in 1982. They held that the evidence against the 71 year old officer was "weak" and released him after 27 years of imprisonment. The case was widely reported. [4]
In 2010,Suresh was one of the judges who heard a case between the University of Delhi and their teachers' union,which had refused to teach classes after the university switched from an annual examination system to a system of examinations conducted every semester. The case was filed by the Delhi University Teachers' Union,and ultimately decided in favour of the University,allowing the semester system to be implemented. [5]
Suresh was transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Odisha High Court,taking up her appointment on 28 October 2010. [1] [6] The move was ordered by President Pratibha Patil,who transferred 11 judges on recommendations from the Supreme Court . [7]
In December 2010,Suresh asked a senior advocate in the High Court to take his seat,after he intervened in a case that he was not involved in,to argue a point for a counsel in that matter. In response to her request,the Odisha High Court Bar Association boycotted her court,with the secretary of the association describing the request as "hurtful". Suresh went on leave following the boycott. [3] [8]
She retired on 17 February 2012. [9] She is currently on the panel of arbitrators listed with the Indian Council of Arbitration. [10]
Suresh was educated in Delhi,graduating from Inderprastha College,University of Delhi in 1969. She studied law at the Faculty of Law,University of Delhi. [1] [2]
Gopal Ballav Pattanaik is an Indian lawyer and later a jurist who served over a period of 19 years in the bench of the Odisha High Court as a permanent judge,as chief justice of the Patna High Court,Judge of the Supreme Court of India and as the 32nd Chief Justice of India.

Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani is a former Indian judge and prosecutor,who last served as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Previously,as a judge of the Bombay High Court,she notably upheld the conviction of several persons for the rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during the 2002 Gujarat riots,chastising investigative authorities for their inaction in the matter,and also refused parole for those convicted in the 1993 Bombay bombings. She retired in 2019,after refusing to accept a controversial transfer from the Madras High Court to the Meghalaya High Court.
Ms. Justice Sanju Panda is an Indian judge. She is a former Judge of Orissa High Court. She has also served as Acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court.

Bangalore Venkataramiah Nagarathna is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. She served as a judge of the Karnataka High Court from 2008 to 2021. Her father,E. S. Venkataramiah,was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India in 1989.
Roshan Dalvi is a former judge of the Bombay High Court,in Maharashtra,India. She gained public attention after writing several controversial judicial orders,including an granting bail to political activist Kanhaiya Kumar,in which she quoted Bollywood song lyrics and described surgical procedures to caution him,and another order describing the offence of rape as a "weapon for vengeance and personal vendetta". She has also written several significant judgments,including the reaffirmation of death penalty to the convicts of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder,and the reduction of sentences and grant of bail to convicted offenders of child sexual abuse on the grounds that the child victim may have consented to the abuse.

Usha Mehra is a former judge of the Delhi High Court,in India. She authored a significant report on lapses in police and judicial procedure in investigating and prosecuting cases of sexual assault in India,following the 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder.

Bar Council of Orissa is the regulatory and statutorily representative body for lawyers practicing law in the state of Orissa. It was constituted as per the mandatory requirement as per Advocates Act,1961 and Bar Council of India. In March 1953,S. R. Das as head of the 'All India Bar Committee',proposed the creation of the apex body as an All-India Bar Council and Bar council at state levels and submitted a report to the Central Government of India. Members of the Bar Council are elected from among members enrolled and practicing as lawyers practicing law in the state of Orissa and they represent the state in Bar Council of India meetings. Bar Council of a place designs standards of professional conduct to be followed by members,and designs etiquettes and has the power to enforce disciplinary guidelines over the members of bar council.
Chinmayee Jena versus State of Odisha &Ors.(2020) is case where the Orissa High Court upheld the right of self-determination of gender as an integral part of personal autonomy and self-expression. The court recognized the rights of trans persons to cohabit with the partner of their choice,regardless of the “gender”of the partner.
