Asadulla Qudrat oghlu Jafarov (Azerbaijani : Əsədulla Qüdrət oğlu Cəfərov) is an Azerbaijani archaeologist and paleontologist, head of the "Stone Age Archeology" Department of the Institute of Archaeology, Ethnology and Anthropology of ANAS, [1] Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor. [2]
Asadulla Jafarov was born in 1949 in the village of Arkivan, Masally district.
In 1966, he graduated from the secondary school in the village of Arkivan and entered the history department of the Azerbaijan State University, which he graduated in 1973.
In 1968–1970, he worked at the Museum of Natural History of the Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. Since 1971, he has been working at the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
In 1973–1974, he served in the Soviet Army. From November 1, 1975, to November 1, 1977, he worked as a research intern at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. From November 1, 1977, to January 9, 1984 – junior researcher at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, from January 10, 1984, to December 1, 1992 – senior researcher, from December 1, 1992 – From 1991 to 1994 he worked as a leading researcher, and since 1994 – head of the Stone Age Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology, Ethnology and Anthropology.
In 1979, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the academic council of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences and received the academic degree of candidate of historical sciences. In 1980, for the monograph "Mousterian Culture of Azerbaijan" he was awarded the Komsomol Republican Prize in Science and Technology. On December 25, 1992, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Middle Paleolithic of Azerbaijan” at the Academic Council of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
In 2001, at an international conference held in Tautavel (France), [3] he was elected as the coordinator of the INTAS-2000 program for Azerbaijan and received a grant. [4] In 2001 and 2003, he conducted joint scientific research with European scientists in France for 3 months and presented scientific reports on the ancient history of Karabakh. [5] In 2002, he won the "100 Outstanding Scientists of Azerbaijan" competition.
In 2015, by the decision of the European Publishing House Award Commission, I was awarded the prize for my contribution to the protection of our national and spiritual values, active intellectual position in society, successful scientific research in the field of studying the ancient history of Karabakh, the paleolithic sites of Azykh, Taghlar, Gazma at the level of modern requirements of archaeological science, my numerous scientific and journalistic works. For his books, he was awarded the "Gold Medal" as the best patriotic research scientist, education of patriotic feelings in youth, as well as merits in the history of the development of archaeological science in Azerbaijan.
For more than 50 years of work at ANAS, Asadulla Jafarov wrote 8 books, 142 scientific articles and more than 100 scientific and journalistic articles on various stages of the development of the history of the Stone Age and the primitive communal system of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and Europe. Lerik District is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the southeast of the country and belongs to the Lankaran-Astara Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Yardimli, Masally, Lankaran, Astara and the Ardabil Province of Iran. Its capital and largest city is Lerik. As of 2022, the district had a population of 87,000. It is located between the Talysh Mountains and the agricultural plain of the Lankaran Lowland.

Damjili – is a half-circular shaped cave site in Azerbaijan, where evidence of prehistoric human presence during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic was discovered.
The Taghlar cave is an archaeological site that was inhabited by prehistoric humans of the Mousterian culture during the Paleolithic. The cave is located in Azerbaijan, in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, in the southern part of Boyuk Taghlar village, on the left banks of the Guruchay River.
Mammadali Murad Oglu Huseynov was an Azerbaijani and Soviet archaeologist. In 1960, Huseynov carried out excavations in the valleys of the Quruchay and Kondalanchay Rivers, in Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast of the Azerbaijan SSR. There, he discovered a fragment of the lower jaw of Homo erectus or Azykhantrop in multi-layer sites of the Paleolithic epoch in Azykh and Tağlar Cave.
Buzeyir cave – is an archaeological site and Paleolithic place of human habitation. The cave is located on the left bank of the Zuvandchay River, at the top of Delikli-Dash Mountain, 3 km (1.9 mi) at an altitude of 1,640 m (5,380 ft) above sea level and to the east of Büzeyir village in Lerik Rayon, Azerbaijan.
Allar Cave is an archaeological site and Middle Paleolithic human settlement. The cave is situated on the left bank of the Vilesh River, in Allar village, Yardymli Rayon, Azerbaijan, at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) above sea level.
Yusif Bahlul oglu Yusifov was an Azerbaijani and Soviet historian, linguist, toponymist, orientalist, turkologist and an outstanding authority on ancient languages, including Sumerian and Akkadian.
Mirasadulla Miralasgar oglu Mirgasimov was an Azerbaijani and Soviet surgeon and scientist. He was one of the founders and the first president of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (1945–1947).

Stone Age in Azerbaijan is divided into the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods. It was studied in Karabakh, Gazakh, Lerik, Gobustan, and Nakhchivan. Stone materials belonging to the Stone Age were found by Mammadali Huseynov in the Shorsu gorge located near the village of Gyrag Kasaman in Qazakh region. According to his research, people have first settled in the territory of Azerbaijan 2 million years ago. The Stone Age era involved two different human species: Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens.
Gazma Cave is a Paleolithic dwelling site discovered between Ordubad and Sharur districts in 1983. Gazma Cave is located 3 km northeast of Tananam village, 1450 m above the sea level.
Waldemar Chmielewski was a Polish archaeologist, professor and founding director of the Institute of Archeology at the University of Warsaw. He specialized in the prehistory of Africa and Asia and was an expert in the study of the Paleolithic era in Polish territories.
Abdulkerim Alizada, was an Azerbaijani historian, writer, and orientalist and a member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. His works spans the medieval history of Azerbaijan and the countries of the Near and Middle East. Because of his contributions and researches, Alizada was awarded the USSR State Prize in Science (1948), the Mirza Fatali Akhundov State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR (1978), the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Medal "For the Defence of the Caucasus", Medal "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945", and the Order of the Badge of Honour.
Shukurov Karim Karam oglu is an Azerbaijani historian, doctor of Historical Science, professor, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan, general director of the History and Ethnology Institute, which was named after A. A. Bakikhanov of ANAS, chairman of the Scientific Council of the institute, and professor of the Azerbaijan University of Tourism and Management.
