Ashford House, located in the Adelaide suburb of Ashford, South Australia, was originally built in 1838 by Dr Charles Everard, [1] and is amongst the oldest historic buildings in South Australia.

The house has Local Heritage listing status with the City of West Torrens. [2]

On 19 November 2019, the City of West Torrens voted and resolved to seek State Heritage listing by the SA Heritage Council. [3]

History

The current building was completed in 1882. At the rear of the house are the remains of an old gum tree, which is of historical significance as it was in place when Dr Everard arrived in 1836. [4]

Usage

In 1952 The Crippled Children’s Association of South Australia purchased [5] Ashford House. Since 1976 the house has been operated by the Department of Education and Children Development and currently forms part of the Errington Special Education Centre. It was placed on the Classified List by the National Trust of South Australia in 1980.[ citation needed ] In October 2012, the South Australian State Government announced [6] construction had commenced at the William Light School in Plympton to allow relocation from the current site at the beginning of 2014. In November 2013, the SA Government announced a school specifically for children with autism spectrum disorders will commence in 2015. The school, called the Treetop Autism Specific School, [7] opened in 2016 and is the state's first school specifically for autistic students.

Ashford is a former electorate for the South Australian Legislative Assembly which included many of Adelaide's inner south western suburbs. The district formed part of three federal electorates: the Division of Hindmarsh, the Division of Boothby, and the Division of Adelaide. The former electorate included the suburbs of Ashford, Black Forest, Camden Park, Clarence Gardens, Clarence Park, Cumberland Park, Everard Park, Forestville, Glandore, Keswick, Kings Park, Novar Gardens and Plympton as well as parts of Edwardstown, Goodwood, Millswood, Plympton Park, South Plympton and Wayville. The former electorate covered an area of approximately 14.6 square kilometres (5.6 sq mi).

Torrens Building

The Torrens Building, named after Sir Robert Richard Torrens, is a State Heritage-listed building on the corner of Victoria Square and Wakefield Street in Adelaide, South Australia. It was originally known as the New Government Offices, and after that a succession of names reflecting its tenants, including as New Public Offices, the Lands Titles Office, and Engineering & Water Supply Department. It has been home to a number of government departments for much of its existence.
