The Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket championship played in India between multiple teams representing regional and state cricket associations. The competition is named after the first Indian cricketer who played international cricket, Ranjitsinhji, who was also known as 'Ranji'.

Subramaniam Badrinath is a former Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed middle order batsman. Badrinath has represented India in One Day International and test matches. In first class cricket, he captains Vidarbha and was captain of Tamil Nadu earlier. In the Indian Premier League, he represented Chennai Super Kings till 2013 and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015. He has also represented the Indian Board President's XI on several occasions. He was named in the 30 man provisional squad for the 2007 Cricket World Cup but did not make it to the final squad.
Umeshkumar Tilak Yadav is an Indian cricketer who currently plays for Vidarbha cricket team, Indian national team and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. A right-arm fast bowler, Yadav has played for Vidarbha at domestic level since 2008 and is the first player from the team to have played Test cricket. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Zimbabwe in May 2010. The following year, in November, Yadav made his Test debut against the West Indies. He was the highest wicket-taker for India in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Imran Ali was an Indian cricketer who played regularly for Vidarbha during the 1960s and 1970s. A talented junior player, he toured Ceylon with an India Schools representative side in April 1964, and made his first-class debut for Vidarbha during the 1964–65 season. Playing as a middle-order batsman, Imran established himself as a regular player in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy team throughout the next decade, and during the 1968–69 season even played two matches for Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy, although without much success. He retired at the end of the 1976–77 season after thirteen seasons for Vidarbha, having captained the side in his final two seasons.

The stadium has hosted two Ranji Trophy match in 1970 when Rajasthan cricket team played against Vidarbha cricket team. The ground hosted one more Ranji Trophy matches in 1972 when Rajasthan cricket team played against Madhya Pradesh cricket team but since then the stadium has hosted non-first-class matches.

Pradeep Sunderam is a former Indian first-class cricketer who currently works as a cricket coach. During his playing career, Sunderam represented Rajasthan cricket team between 1982/83 and 1990/91. Sunderam is one of the two bowlers to have taken all ten wickets in an innings of a Ranji Trophy match, having achieved the feat in the 1985/86 season when he took 10/78 in an innings.

Vidarbha won the tournament, beating Delhi by 9 wickets in the final, to win their first Ranji Trophy title. Vidarbha made their Ranji Trophy debut in the 1957–58 season, making it the third-longest wait before a team won their maiden title. Vidarbha's captain, Faiz Fazal, said that "winning the Ranji Trophy has been the biggest achievement in my career".
