Asithandile Zozo (born 2001- 17 August 2020) was a South African gender-based violence victim. [1] She was killed by her then-ex-boyfriend, Viwe Rulumeni, after she ended the relationship. [2]
Asithandile Zozo was born in Dutywa, Eastern Cape province of South Africa. She was a child of Mlungisi Zozo, a school principal from Zwelidumile High School the same town. At the time of her murder, Zozo was a student of Bachelor of Science at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, Gauteng. [3]
Viwe Rulumeni admitted to choking and stabbing Zozo to death. [4] It was reported that he did this gruesome act in front of several people including Zozo's siblings,on 17 August 2020 in Butterworth, Eastern Cape. [5] This was after Zozo ended their relationship and ignored his calls and attempts to talk to her. [4] After stabbing her, Rulumeni drank poison to commit suicide, but recovered at the local hospital. [6] On 02 June 2021, Butterworth Regional Court found Rulumeni guilty of murder and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. [7] [8] [9] [10]
