Aspen HYSYS (or simply HYSYS) is a chemical process simulator currently developed by AspenTech used to mathematically model chemical processes, from unit operations to full chemical plants and refineries. HYSYS is able to perform many of the core calculations of chemical engineering, including those concerned with mass balance, energy balance, vapor-liquid equilibrium, heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, fractionation, and pressure drop. [2] HYSYS is used extensively in industry and academia for steady-state and dynamic simulation, process design, performance modeling, and optimization. [3] [4]

Etymology

HYSYS is a portmanteau formed from Hyprotech, the name of the company which created the software, and Systems. [3]

History

HYSYS was first conceived and created by the Canadian company Hyprotech, founded by researchers from the University of Calgary. [5] [6] The HYSYS Version 1.1 Reference Volume was published in 1996. [7] In May 2002, AspenTech acquired Hyprotech, including HYSYS for approximately $99 million. [8] [9]

Following a 2004 ruling by the United States Federal Trade Commission, AspenTech was forced to divest its Hyprotech assets, [10] including HYSYS source code, ultimately selling these to Honeywell. Honeywell was also able to hire a number of HYSYS developers, ultimately mobilizing these resources to produce UniSim. [11] The divestment agreement specified that Aspentech would retain rights to market and develop most Hyprotech products (including HYSYS) royalty-free. [12] As of 2024, AspenTech continues to produce HYSYS. [13]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pilot plant</span>

A pilot plant is a pre-commercial production system that employs new production technology and/or produces small volumes of new technology-based products, mainly for the purpose of learning about the new technology. The knowledge obtained is then used for design of full-scale production systems and commercial products, as well as for identification of further research objectives and support of investment decisions. Other (non-technical) purposes include gaining public support for new technologies and questioning government regulations. Pilot plant is a relative term in the sense that pilot plants are typically smaller than full-scale production plants, but are built in a range of sizes. Also, as pilot plants are intended for learning, they typically are more flexible, possibly at the expense of economy. Some pilot plants are built in laboratories using stock lab equipment, while others require substantial engineering efforts, cost millions of dollars, and are custom-assembled and fabricated from process equipment, instrumentation and piping. They can also be used to train personnel for a full-scale plant. Pilot plants tend to be smaller compared to demonstration plants.

Chemical reaction engineering is a specialty in chemical engineering or industrial chemistry dealing with chemical reactors. Frequently the term relates specifically to catalytic reaction systems where either a homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst is present in the reactor. Sometimes a reactor per se is not present by itself, but rather is integrated into a process, for example in reactive separations vessels, retorts, certain fuel cells, and photocatalytic surfaces. The issue of solvent effects on reaction kinetics is also considered as an integral part.

Chemfluence is a national level technical symposium of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Alagappa College of Technology, Anna University, India. It started in 1994 as a college level symposium, and is now in its 29th year. Paper presentations, poster presentations, guest lectures, workshops and events form an integral part of the symposium. The symposium mainly aims at nourishing budding chemical engineers with knowledge of core concepts and providing an opportunity to showcase their talents. With more than 20 events across 3 days, it is one of the most prestigious tech events of South India. It is also one of the very few symposiums in India to host a cultural fest in association with university departments. Chemfluence is conducted annually by the Association of Chemical Engineers (ACE), the official student body of Department of Chemical Engineering, Anna University.

Integrated asset modelling (IAM) is the generic term used in the oil industry for computer modelling of both the subsurface and the surface elements of a field development. Historically the reservoir has always been modelled separately from the surface network and the facilities. In order to capture the interaction between those two or more standalone models, several time-consuming iterations were required. For example, a change in the water breakthrough leads to a change in the deliverability of the surface network which in turn leads to a production acceleration or deceleration in the reservoir. In order to go through this lengthy process more quickly, the industry has slowly been adopting a more integrated approach which captures the constraints imposed by the infrastructure on the network immediately.

Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, ChemCad and MATLAB, PRO are the commonly used process simulators for modeling, simulation and optimization of a distillation process in the chemical industries. Distillation is the technique of preferential separation of the more volatile components from the less volatile ones in a feed followed by condensation. The vapor produced is richer in the more volatile components. The distribution of the component in the two phase is governed by the vapour-liquid equilibrium relationship. In practice, distillation may be carried out by either two principal methods. The first method is based on the production of vapor boiling the liquid mixture to be separated and condensing the vapors without allowing any liquid to return to the still. There is no reflux. The second method is based on the return of part of the condensate to still under such conditions that this returning liquid is brought into intimate contact with the vapors on their way to condenser.
