History

Aspengrove School was founded in 2003 and was originally located at 6553 Portsmouth Road in Nanaimo. At the time of its grand opening 42 students and 8 faculty occupied the 1-acre (4,000 m2) lot. The first principal was Cathy Grunlund. Over the summer of 2006 the school relocated and currently operates on a 40-acre (160,000 m2) parcel. There are approximately 310 enrolled students and 50 faculty offering instruction from Jr. Kindergarten for 3-year-olds to Grade 12. The school is accredited as an International Baccalaureate World School [1] and offers the IB Primary Years, IB Middle Years and IB Diploma programme and received a 10 out of 10 by the IB Organization (IBO) in 2011.

In 2023, the former head of Aspengrove was banned from teaching for 15 years after, in August 2022, he sent sexually explicit messages to and attempted to meet up with someone he believed to be 15 years old. [2] That person was actually an adult vigilante posing as an underaged youth in order to catch predators in what is known as a "creep catcher" sting operation. [3] After a video of the attempted meet-up and screenshots of their online conversations were posted to a Facebook group and the school became aware of the incident, the school fired Pierotti and reported him to the Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, [4] as per the Independent Schools Act.

Creep Catchers are non-affiliated individuals and groups who attempt to prevent child sexual abuse by posing as minors, using chat rooms and dating sites to lure adults willing to meet the minor for sex, and then exposing the adult by publicly posting videos of the ensuing confrontation. Creep Catchers offer the opportunity to make a public statement before posting the video and chat logs to a central website and various social media. Cooperative suspects are typically lectured to in relative privacy, while belligerents or those with particularly explicit conversations are loudly shamed and profanely ridiculed. Public and official reactions to groups of Creep Catchers have been mixed, with some supporting the intent of preventing abuse and others noting dangers of vigilantism by untrained public. In 2017, Vice.com produced Age of Consent, a full-length documentary film following Toronto resident Justin Payne, an independent Creep Catcher unaffiliated with other groups of the movement.
