Aston Medical School (AMS) [1] [2] [3] is part of Aston University, located in the city centre of Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. It is the 34th medical school in the UK and 6th in the Midlands. [4] It exists to train doctors and to promote medical research. Aston Medical School was conceived and led by the founder Professor Asif Ahmed, who was the inaugural Executive Dean and also served as the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Health. The current Dean of Aston Medical School is Professor Anthony Hilton.

Course

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) degree is a 5-year course. Phase I (the first two years) consist of learning through a systems based approach the structure and function of the human body. Teaching is generally delivered via traditional lectures, small group learning, and exposure to anatomical models and cadaveric specimens. Early clinical training is integrated into this phase with extensive clinical correlations, clinical skills teaching and community based general practice experience. Phase II (final three years) consists of predominantly hospital based training in the West Midlands region. Students will be offered the opportunity to undertake an integrated postgraduate certificate in Health Leadership as a student selected component of phase II. [5]

Aston Medical School will also offer various research options for postgraduate students.

Admissions

From September 2015 Aston Medical School took PhD students into Aston Medical Research Institute (AMRI). In September 2016, Aston Medical School started a taught MSc course in Surgery for Specialist Registrars which coincided with Aston's 50th Anniversary. The first undergraduate MBChB students commenced studies in September 2018, following approval of its programme by the General Medical Council which regulates the medical profession in the United Kingdom.

Aston Medical School has been fully accredited in 2023 after the first batch of medical students graduated.

Research

Aston Medical Research Institute (AMRI) is the Translational Medicine arm of Aston University and brings together all five schools with a distinct focus: to rapidly develop new and affordable medical therapies and diagnostics for global use with relative ease. In the first instance, AMS researchers are focused on the areas of cardiology, obstetrics and regenerative medicine. A number of Early Career Researchers from the USA have joined AMRI and AMS on Marie Curie Fellowships. The ACALM Study Unit founded by Rahul Potluri is in collaboration with Aston Medical School and has undertaken notable research. [6] [7]

The Makerere University School of Medicine (MUSM), also known as the Makerere University Medical School, is the school of medicine of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university. As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Kampala International University School of Health Sciences is the school of health sciences of Kampala International University, a private Ugandan university. The school provides health sciences education at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Rahul Potluri is a British physician, researcher and founder of ACALM Study Unit, United Kingdom (UK). His clinical epidemiology research unit is one of the first to use big data in healthcare and medical research. His work has shown for the first time a link between high cholesterol and breast cancer. Further research has suggested the role of cholesterol and possibly statins improving the mortality in patients with breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer and bowel cancer. Other prominent studies include health services research evaluating differences in death rates from weekend admission and discharge from UK hospitals, ethnic variations and the interplay between cardiovascular disease and mental health.
