Atheist billboard

Last updated

An atheist billboard is an outdoor billboard that promotes divestment or outreach to atheists, nontheists, or nonreligious individuals. Similar to the Atheist Bus Campaign first undertaken in the United Kingdom by Ariane Sherine in October 2008, atheist billboards often include messages or graphics which either assert the lack of evidence for the existence of deities or positively encourage those who are privately questioning the existence of a deity (or the supernatural), and such advertisements have garnered controversy and negative reactions from local theists.

United States

The earliest-documented atheist billboard was first posted by FreeThoughtAction and the American Humanist Association in January 2008 along Route 95 South in Ridgefield; [1] the billboard stated "Don't believe in God? You are not alone" against a cloudy sky background. It was followed in June 2008 by another billboard (containing the same words and background) along Interstate 95 near the Allegheny Avenue exit which was funded by Steve Rade, a Huntingdon Valley businessman, and spearheaded (and underlined) by the Greater Philadelphia Coalition of Reason (PhillyCOR); [2] [3] a large batch of billboards with the same contents was posted in November 2008 by COCORE, an umbrella organization of atheists and secular humanists in Colorado, at 10 sites in Denver and one in Colorado Springs, with the payment for the campaign going to upwards of $5,000 for four weeks starting on November 17. [4] By this time, local atheist groups were encouraged to spearhead the billboards by the Atheist Bus Campaign, which had been started in the United Kingdom and soon spread to other countries in which public transit constitutes a main means of both transportation and advertisement (for both businesses and religious movements).

Accurate demographics of atheism are difficult to obtain since conceptions of atheism vary considerably across different cultures and languages, ranging from an active concept to being unimportant or not developed. Also in some countries and regions atheism carries a strong stigma, making it harder to count atheists in these countries. In global studies, the number of people without a religion is usually higher than the number of people without a belief in a deity and the number of people who agree with statements on lacking a belief in a deity is usually higher than the number of people who self-identify as "atheists".

Implicit and explicit atheism Types of atheism

Implicit atheism and explicit atheism are types of atheism. In George H. Smith's Atheism: The Case Against God, "implicit atheism" is defined as "the absence of theistic belief without a conscious rejection of it", while "explicit atheism" is "the absence of theistic belief due to a conscious rejection of it". Explicit atheists have considered the idea of deities and have rejected belief that any exist. Implicit atheists, though they do not themselves maintain a belief in a god or gods, have not rejected the notion or have not considered it further.

Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.

Atheism in the African diaspora Atheism experienced by black people outside of Africa

Atheism in the African diaspora is atheism as it is experienced by black people outside of Africa. In the United States, black people are less likely than any other ethnic groups to be religiously unaffiliated, let alone identifying as atheist. The demographics are similar in the United Kingdom. Atheists are individuals who do not hold a belief in God or gods. Atheism is a disbelief in God or gods or a denial of God or gods, or it is simply a lack of belief in gods. Some, but not all, atheists identify as secular humanists, who are individuals who believe that life has meaning and joy without the need for the supernatural or religion and that all individuals should live ethical lives which can provide for the greater good of humanity. Black atheists and secular humanists exist today and in history, though many were not always vocal in their beliefs or lack of belief.
