The practice of sports in Argentina is varied due to the population's diverse European origins and the mostly mild climate. 1951 Pan American Games First edition of the Pan American Games

The 1951 Pan American Games were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina between February 25 and March 9, 1951. The Pan American Games' origins were at the Games of the X Olympiad in Los Angeles, United States, where officials representing the National Olympic Committees of the Americas discussed the staging of an Olympic-style regional athletic competition for the athletes of the Americas.

The second Pan American Games opened on March 12, 1955, in the University Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, in front of a capacity crowd of 100,000 spectators.

Jennifer Dahlgren Argentine hammer thrower

Jennifer Dahlgren Fitzner is an Argentine hammer thrower. Having spent much of her life in the United States, she competed as an amateur for the University of Georgia. She set the US collegiate hammer record and was the NCAA Outdoor champion in both 2006 and 2007. She is a three-time gold medallist at the South American Championships and won the bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games.

Carolyn Virginia Green, also known by her married name Carolyn Lewis, is an American former competition swimmer and two-time Pan American Games gold medalist.

2011 South American Championships in Athletics

The 2011 South American Championships in Athletics were the 47th edition of the South American Championships, organised under the supervision of the CONSUDATLE. They were held at the National Center of High Performance Athletics in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 2 to 5 June 2011. Forty-four track and field events were contested, with the number of contests split evenly between the sexes. A total of 345 athletes participated at the championships.

Frances Theresa Kaszubski was an American born, Polish track and field athlete known for her participation in weight throwing, discus and shot put. During World War II she officially represented Poland, but competed primarily in the United States. A contemporary on her Polish Women's Olympic Club at the time in Cleveland, was Stanisława Walasiewicz who also represented Poland. After her marriage and after the war she chose to represent the United States, as did Walasiewicz, who changed her name to Stella Walsh.

Emilio Ortíz was an Argentine male track and field athlete who competed in the hammer throw. His greatest achievement was a gold medal at the inaugural 1951 Pan American Games, held on home turf in Buenos Aires. He won with a mark of 48.04 m, beating fellow Argentine Manuel Etchepare by nearly two metres. He was a surprise winner of that event, over more favoured opposition. Ortíz remained the only South American to win that hammer title until he was matched by his fellow countryman Juan Ignacio Cerra in 2003.

Amelia Wood was an American track and field athlete who competed in throwing events, specializing in the javelin throw. She was a Pan American Games champion and a 1956 Olympian.

Hortensia García

Hortensia "Stretch" López García was a Mexican-American javelin thrower, softball player, and basketball player. Representing Mexico, she won a gold medal in the javelin at the inaugural 1951 Pan American Games. In 1978, she became the first female player to be elected to the El Paso Softball Hall of Fame, and later served as the organization's president.
