The men's 50 kilometres race walk at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico was held on October 17. It was won by Christoph Höhne of East Germany. [1]

50 kilometres race walk

The 50 kilometre race walk is an Olympic athletics event. The racewalking event is competed as a road race. Athletes must always keep in contact with the ground and the supporting leg must remain straight until the raised leg passes it. Fifty kilometres is approximately 31 miles.

The 1968 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in Mexico City, Mexico, from October 12th to the 27th.

Paul Nihill British athlete

Vincent Paul Nihill is a retired British race walker. He competed in the 50 km event at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics and won a silver medal in 1964. In 1968 he suffered from the high altitude conditions of Mexico and collapsed at the 44th kilometre, which was his only defeat in 86 races between 1967 and 1970. After that he focused on the 20 km distance, and won a European title in this event in 1969, followed by a bronze medal in 1971. In July 1972 he set a world record in the 20 km, but finished only sixth at the 1972 Olympics. He also competed in the 20 km walk in the 1976 Olympics, before retiring the following year.

Antal Kiss was a Hungarian athlete, who mainly competed in the 50 kilometre walk.

Ronald ("Ron") Owen Laird was a race walker from the United States, who competed for the New York Athletic Club. He represented his native country at four Olympiads. His best finish was 19th place in the men's 50 km walk at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. He won the 20 km event at the 1967 Pan American Games, and finished 25th in that event in the Mexico City 1968 Summer Olympics and 20th in the Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics, but was disqualified in the 1964 Summer Olympics event in Tokyo.

Goetz Heinrich Klopfer was a male race walker, who represented the United States at two Summer Olympics, starting in 1968. His best finish was the 10th place in the men's 50 km walk at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He won the 20 km event at the 1971 Pan American Games.

The Men's 50 km Race Walking event at the 2007 Pan American Games took place on July 28, 2007 in the Parque do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. Ecuador's Xavier Moreno captured the title, defeating the two Mexicans Horacio Nava and Omar Zepeda.

Race walking events at the Summer Olympics have been contested over a variety of distances at the multi-sport event. There are three race walking events in the current Olympic athletics programme: a men's and a women's 20 kilometres walk, and a men's 50 kilometres walk. The races are held in a final-only format.

The men's individual road race was a road bicycle racing event held as part of the Cycling at the 1968 Summer Olympics programme. 144 cyclists from 44 nations took part. It was held on 23 October 1968. The course, just short of 25 kilometres, was covered 8 times for a total distance of 196.2 kilometres.

These are the official results of the Men's Team Time Trial at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico, held on 15 October 1968. There were 120 participants from 30 nations.
