Igor is a common East Slavic given name derived from the Norse name Ingvar, that was brought to ancient Rus' by the Norse Varangians, in the form Ingvar or Yngvar. Igor, the son of the Varangian chief Rurik, was left with Rurik's distant relative, first Grand Prince of Kiev Oleg, as a child. Igor after the death of Oleg replaced him on Kiev's throne. Outside of the Slavic language sphere, the name has also become common in Brazil and Portugal, and in the Basque-speaking part of Spain.
Viktor Danilovich Saneyev was a Georgian triple jumper who competed internationally for the USSR. He won four Olympic medals – three golds and one silver (1980). Saneyev set the world record on three occasions. He was born in Sukhumi, Georgian SSR, trained in Sukhumi and Tbilisi, and died in Sydney.
Ihor Chervynskyy is a Ukrainian swimmer who competes in the freestyle events. At the 2003 World Aquatics Championships he won a bronze medal in the 800 metres, and a silver medal in the 1500 metres.

Ihor Urbansky is a Ukrainian luger who competed in the mid to late 1990s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he earned his best finish of seventh in the men's doubles event at Nagano in 1998.
Rafael Arkadyevich Chimishkyan was a weightlifter who competed for the Soviet Union and Olympic, World, European and Soviet Champion. Chimishkyan was awarded the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR title in 1952. He was an honorary citizen of Tbilisi.
Ihor Mykhaylovych Rybak was a Ukrainian weightlifter. He competed for the Soviet Union twice, at the 1956 Summer Olympics and 1956 European Championships. On both occasions he won ahead of Ravil Khabutdinov. Due to the severe competition within the Soviet Union, Rybak never won a national title, and by 1960 was left out of the national team. In retirement he worked in sports medicine.
Igor Korobchinski is a former gymnast that represented the Soviet Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Ukraine. In 2016, he was inducted in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
Heorhiy Semenovych Zhylin was a Ukrainian rower who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1952 Summer Olympics and in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
Igor Fedorovich Yemchuk was a Ukrainian rower who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1952 Summer Olympics and in the 1956 Summer Olympics. In 1952 he won the silver medal with his partner Heorhiy Zhylin in the double sculls event. Four years later he was a crew member of the Soviet boat which won the bronze medal in the coxed pairs competition.
Steven Richard Erickson is an American sailor and Olympic champion in the Star class. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and won a gold medal in the Star together with William Earl Buchan.
