Austin Ciaz Matthew White (born 14 February 1959) is a former West Indian cricketer. White was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium. He was born on Montserrat.
White first played for Montserrat against St Kitts in the 1976 Hesketh Bell Shield. [1] In that same year he made his Youth Test match debut for West Indies Young Cricketers against England Young Cricketers. [2] He followed this match up by making his Youth One Day International debut against the same opposition. [3] He made further appearances for West Indies Young Cricketers in 1978 during their tour of England,making two further Youth Test match appearances and a single Youth One Day International appearance. In 1979,he made his first-class debut for the Leeward Islands against the Windward Islands. [4] In that same year,he made his List A debut for the team against Barbados in the 1978/79 Geddes Grant/Harrison Line Trophy. [5] In 1980,he made a single List A appearance for the Leeward Islands against Guyana, [5] before following this up the following year with a single first-class appearance against a touring England XI. [4] In that same year,he made two List A appearances against Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago in the 1980/81 Geddes Grant/Harrison Line Trophy. [5] In 1982,he made a single first-class appearance in the 1981/82 Shell Shield against Trinidad and Tobago, [4] as well as making two List A appearances in that seasons Geddes Grant/Harrison Line Trophy against Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. [5] He made two final first-class appearances for the Leeward Islands in 1983 against Barbados and the touring Indians, [4] as well as two further List A appearances against Barbados and Guyana. [5] In four first-class matches,he scored a total of 78 runs at an average of 8.66,with a high score of 19. [6] With the ball,he took 5 wickets at a bowling average of 73.40,with best figures of 2/63. [7] In List A cricket,he made eight appearances,scoring 21 runs at an average of 7.00,with a high score of 17. [8] With the ball,he took 4 wickets at a bowling average of 33.71,with best figures of 4/51. [9]
He continued to play minor matches for Montserrat during the four-year period in which he played for the Leeward Islands. He continued to play for Montserrat until 1985,with his final recorded match for his home island coming against St Kitts in the 1985 Nissan Leeward Islands Tournament. [1]
The Combined Islands cricket team was a cricket team that represented the cricket-playing islands of the Lesser Antilles,excluding Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago who fielded their own teams. They played in 13 Shell Shield tournaments from 1965–66 to 1980–81,when they won their first title and were subsequently disbanded into Leeward Islands and Windward Islands. Those two teams had first-class status before 1980–81,but competed together in the Shell Shield.
Nezam Ahmed Hafiz was a Guyanese-born American cricketer. Hafiz was a right-handed middle order batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was killed in the North Tower during the September 11 attacks.
Leonard Alphonso Harris was a West Indian cricketer who played for the Leeward Islands between 1958 and 1971. An opening batsman for much of his career,and occasional bowler in his final seasons,Harris played in West Indian first class cricket,as well as facing the MCC team,England and Australia during his career. He played 27 matches,scoring nearly 1,400 runs at 29.04,including a century,and taking 15 wickets at 19.46. He then went on to play lower-level cricket for St. Kitts until 1976,and helped create the first cricket academy in the Leeward Islands.
The Salem Oval is a cricket ground located in the village of Salem,Montserrat. The ground was constructed following the destruction of Montserrat's main cricket ground in Plymouth,which was destroyed in the Soufrière Hills eruption of 1997.
Sturge Park was a cricket ground located on five acres of land adjacent to Plymouth,Montserrat. The ground,used by the Montserrat cricket team and infrequently by the Leeward Islands cricket team,was destroyed in the Soufrière Hills volcanic eruption of 1997. A replacement ground,the Salem Oval,was opened in 2000 on the north of the island.
