Avioimpex was an airline carrier from the Republic of Macedonia (now North Macedonia), based in Skopje. It operated both scheduled and charter services to and from Skopje and Ohrid.

[1] [2] Avioimpex was established as Interimpex-Avioimpex in September 1992. The airline changed its name to Avioimpex on 2 November 1999, and operations were suspended in September 2002 after the Macedonian CAA revoked its operating license due to financial difficulties.

Accidents

On 20 November 1993 Avioimpex Flight 110, a Yak-42, crashed near Ohrid Airport. The aircraft was on a flight from Geneva, Switzerland to Skopje, Macedonia, but had been diverted to the airport in Ohrid due to poor weather conditions. [4]

On final approach the aircraft struck into the Trojan Hills, that lie in close vicinity to the airport. All eight crew members and 116 passengers died. One passenger, identified as Rade Jevremovich, survived the initial impact but died from his injuries on December 2.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a series of five-abreast single-aisle airliners developed by McDonnell Douglas. It was produced by the developer company until August 1997 and then by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The MD-80 was the second generation of the DC-9 family, originally designated as the DC-9-80 and later stylized as the DC-9 Super 80 . The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is an American tri-jet wide-body airliner manufactured by American manufacturer McDonnell Douglas (MDC) and later by Boeing. Following DC-10 development studies, the MD-11 program was launched on December 30, 1986. Assembly of the first prototype began on March 9, 1988. Its maiden flight occurred on January 10, 1990, and it achieved Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification on November 8. The first delivery was to Finnair on December 7 and it entered service on December 20, 1990.

Lion Air Flight 538 (JT538/LNI538) was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, Jakarta, to Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, with a stopover at Adi Sumarmo Airport, Surakarta, Indonesia. On 30 November 2004, the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 overran the runway of Adi Sumarmo Airport, and crashed onto a cemetery on landing; 25 people on board were killed in the crash, including the captain. At the time, the accident was Lion Air's only fatal hull loss until 2018. Investigation conducted by the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee concluded that the crash was caused by hydroplaning, which was aggravated by wind shear.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Avioimpex Flight 110</span> 1993 aviation accident

Avioimpex Flight 110 was a scheduled international passenger flight operated by Avioimpex that crashed on 20 November 1993 while flying from Geneva to Skopje. Before the disaster, Flight 110 had deviated from Skopje International Airport to Ohrid Airport due to a blizzard in the Macedonian capital. The plane, a Yakovlev Yak-42, was carrying 108 passengers and eight crew, and crashed about 7 kilometres east of Ohrid Airport. All 116 people on board were killed as a result of the crash. One passenger lived for eleven days after the disaster but succumbed to his injuries. Most of the victims were Yugoslav citizens of Albanian ethnicity.
