Awudu Abdulai (born in 1958) is a Ghanaian [1] agricultural and development economist, and professor at the Institute of Food Economics and Consumption Studies, University of Kiel, Germany. [2] His research and teaching focus on issues related to poverty alleviation, food and nutrition security, consumer behavior, and sustainable agriculture.

Education and career

Abdulai earned his BSc degree in agricultural economics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, and both his MSc and PhD degrees from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zurich) in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He received the prestigious outstanding PhD Dissertation Award from ETH-Zurich in 1994.[ citation needed ]

After spending some time as a visiting scholar at Iowa State University in 1997-1998 and Yale University in 2002, Abdulai became an Assistant Professor for Food Economics at the ETH-Zurich, before moving to the University of Kiel in 2004, where he is currently Professor of Food Economics and Food Policy, and Director of the Institute of Food Economics and Consumption Studies. He was invited Cargill Visiting professor at the Center on Food Security and the Environment at Stanford University [3] (2010–2011). [4] He served as Editor of Agricultural Economics from 2012 to 2022. [5] He has also served as Associate Editor and editorial board member of many reputable journals including the American journal of Agricultural Economics and Food Policy. [6]

In 2017, Abdulai became the chair of the Graduate Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences at the University of Kiel. [2]   He was recently appointed as member of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) Fellows Selection Committee in 2021 for the five-year period 2021–2026. [7]

Abdulai has consulted for several international institutions, including the World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), World Food Program (WFP), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Bank of Ghana.[ citation needed ]

Awards

In 2006, Awudu received the Teaching Excellence Award of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Kiel. [2]  In 2015, he was awarded the African-German Network Association Annual Prize for Research and Development. Awudu was inducted as Distinguished Fellow of the African Association of Agricultural Economists in 2010, and was the first black scholar to be named Fellow of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) in 2020. [8] He was also named an Honorary Life Member (Fellow) of the International Association of Agricultural Economists [9] in 2021. [10]

Gordon Rausser is an American economist. He is currently the Robert Gordon Sproul Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Dean Emeritus, at Rausser College of Natural Resources and more recently, a professor of the graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) is a not-for-profit professional association for those interested in the field of agricultural and applied economics. The AAEA association has an annual meeting every year.

Sanjiv M. Ravi Kanbur, is T.H. Lee Professor of World Affairs, International Professor of Applied Economics, and Professor of Economics at Cornell University. He worked for the World Bank for almost two decades and was the director of the World Development Report.

Frederick Vail Waugh (1898–1974) was an American agricultural economist known for his work relating supply, demand, quality, and marketing in the prices of agricultural products, for his understanding of who benefits from volatility in agricultural pricing, and for his advocacy of food stamp and food distribution policies for the poor. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Christopher Brendan Barrett is an American agricultural and development economist. He is the Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley Professor of Applied Economics and Management and International Professor of Agriculture at Cornell University's Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. Barrett is also the co-editor-in-chief of the journal Food Policy and former captain with the United States Army Reserve. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2022. He is the most cited author of a number of agriculture journals such as American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, Journal of Development Studies.

William Alan Masters is an American economist, teaching and conducting research on agricultural economics and food policy in the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University, where he also has a secondary appointment in the Department of Economics.

Jill Jennifer McCluskey is an American economist. She is a Distinguished Professor of Sustainability and Director of the School of Economic Sciences at Washington State University.

Matin Qaim is the Schlegel Professor of Agricultural Economics and Director at the Center for Development Research (ZEF) of the University of Bonn, Germany. His research focuses on issues of food security and sustainable development.

Uma Lele is an agricultural economist, currently at the Institute of Economic Growth at the University of Delhi, India. She has spent much of her career working with the World Bank and other international organizations.
