Awut Deng Acuil is a South Sudanese politician who presently serves as the minister in the Ministry of General Education and Instruction in the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU). She is the first female Minister of Education for South Sudan [1] and was previously Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from August 2019 until March 2020.
Awut Deng was born the daughter of Deng Achuil. Her father's tribe lived on the Nuer-Dinka border. [2]
Awut has a degree in political sciences from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.[ citation needed ]
Early in her career,Deng as a leader of peace efforts. She participated in the New Sudan Council of Churches peace initiative. She was also instrumental in the 1999 Wunlit Peace Conference between the Nuer and Dinka. From 2000 to 2002 Deng traveled the world advocating for peace efforts in South Sudan to various world leaders. She was awarded the 2002 Interaction Humanitarian Award for her efforts for peace. [2]
Deng participated in the peace talks in Kenya from 2002 to 2004 which led to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005. From 2005 to 2010 she held an appointed position to the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly in Juba. She also served as a presidential adviser on gender and human rights from 2005 to 2009. [2] Deng cofounded the Sudenese Catholic Bishops Regional Conference,the Sudenese Women's Association in Nairobi,and the Sudenese Women's Voice for Peace. [3]
Deng served as South Sudan's Minister of Labor and Public Service from 2009 to 2011,taking the role previously held by David Deng Athorbe. [2] She was again appointed to the Cabinet of South Sudan on 10 July 2011. [4] She was sworn in as Minister for Labour,Public Service on 14 September 2011. [5] As part of a new cabinet named in April 2016,Acuil was named Minister of Gender,Child and Social Welfare. [6]
Deng has also been a member of parliament since 2010. [2] [7]
Deng served as Foreign Minister from August 2019 until March 2020,when she was replaced by Beatrice Wani-Noah. [8] She was instead named as the new Minister for General Education and Instruction. [9]
The Dinka people are a Nilotic ethnic group native to South Sudan with a sizable diaspora population abroad. The Dinka mostly live along the Nile,from Jonglei to Renk,in the region of Bahr el Ghazal,Upper Nile,and the Abyei Area of the Ngok Dinka in South Sudan.
The Nuer language is a Nilotic language of the Western Nilotic group. It is spoken by the Nuer people of South Sudan and in western Ethiopia. The language is very similar to Dinka and Atuot.
Salva Kiir Mayardit,also known as Salva Kiir,is a South Sudanese politician who has been President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence,he was President of the Government of Southern Sudan,as well as First Vice President of Sudan,from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005,following the death of Dr. John Garang.
Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon is a South Sudanese politician who serves as the First Vice President of South Sudan.
Lieutenant General Nhial Deng Nhial is a South Sudanese politician and a member of the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). He was Minister of Foreign Affairs 2011 to 2013 and 2018 to 2019 after having served as the caretaker Minister of Defense since 10 July 2011. Prior to that he served as the pre-independence South Sudanese Minister of SPLA and Veteran Affairs,from 22 December 2008 until 9 July 2011.

Ann Itto Leonardo is a South Sudanese politician. She was previously the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry for the South Sundanese government,as well as the acting secretary-general of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement.
Agnes Kwaje Lasuba is a South Sudanese politician.
Jemma Nunu Kumba is a South Sudanese politician. She was chosen by the SPLM as the speaker of the Revitalised Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TNLA). She became the first woman to preside over the parliament of South Sudan.
Taban Deng Gai is a South Sudanese politician who has been one of the Vice Presidents of South Sudan in the unity government since February 2020. He served as the First Vice President of South Sudan from 23 July 2016 to February 2020. He was mining minister before being appointed as acting first vice president.
Ethnic violence in South Sudan has a long history among South Sudan's varied ethnic groups. South Sudan has 64 tribes with the largest being the Dinkas,who constitute about 35% of the population and predominate in government. The second largest are the Nuers. Conflict is often aggravated among nomadic groups over the issue of cattle and grazing land and is part of the wider Sudanese nomadic conflicts.

The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013,President Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and ten others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the SPLM –in opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO,igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The Dinka–Nuer West Bank Peace &Reconciliation Conference of 1999 was held in what was then the Southern part of Sudan. It is commonly called the "Wunlit Peace Conference" after Wunlit,the village where it was held in eastern Tonj County in Bahr El Ghazal. The conference brought together Nuer from Western Upper Nile and Dinka from Tonj,Rumbek,and Yirol. It is the most prominent and comprehensively documented case of a people-to-people peace process in what is now the Republic of South Sudan.
Mayiik Ayii Deng is a South Sudanese politician and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,He was appointed into the office following Republican decree by the President removing Beatrice Khamisa Wani in September 2021. He had also served as the Minister of presidential affairs in the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU). Mr. Deng was appointed minister in the Office of the President on 29 April 2016,following the signing of the Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCISS) and the formation of the transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU,a position he held until he was reappointed as Minister of Presidential Affairs in March 2020 and subsequently relieved in June 2020 in that latest position
The 1st Division, of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) was and is a division of the SPLA,now being renamed as the South Sudan People's Defence Forces. It was established in 2006,and has had its headquarters in Renk,Upper Nile State.
