Aylar Haghi (1999-16 November 2022) was an Iranian student killed by Iranian security forces during the 2022 protests in Tabriz, Iran.

Contents

Government officials and the media have denied her killing, claiming that she fell from a height. Initially, they pressured her family to say that Aylar had committed suicide. When the family refused to accept this, her father was detained by the security forces. As a form of pressure, they didn't release her body to the family for two days and did not permit her burial in her hometown, Malekand.

The burial and the 40-day memorial ceremony for Aylar Haghi took place at the Vadi-e Rahmat cemetery with the participation of citizens. Participants voiced slogans against the government, such as "We are all Aylar, the struggle continues," "Freedom, justice, national government," and "Azerbaijan doesn’t sleep, Aylar's blood does not go in vain." Both ceremonies were disrupted by the intervention of security forces. People were beaten and arrested during these incidents.

After Aylar Haghi 's killing, protests intensified in the East Azerbaijan province. Protests and actions took place in Tabriz, Binab, Malekand, and Ardabil cities, and at Tabriz Azad University where Aylar studied. Several protestors were arrested during these demonstrations.

On November 28, 2022, young girls in the Republic of Azerbaijan organized a flash mob in memory of the people fighting for women's rights in Iran and in memory of Azerbaijani girls killed there, including Hadis Najafi, Asra Panahi, and Aylar Haghi.

Biography

Aylar Haghi was born in 1999 in the city of Malekan [1] to an Azerbaijani family. [1] She and her family later moved to the city of Tabriz. She was a fourth-year student at the medical faculty of Tabriz Azad University at the time of her death. [2]

Killing

Haghi participated in the anti-government protest that took place in Tabriz on November 16, 2022, as part of the 2022 Iran protests. [3] Government forces began to disperse the demonstration by using violence against the demonstrators. After the intervention of the police, Haghi took refuge in a building to escape the violence. [4] Several officers who were chasing her followed her into the building and shot her in the back of the head, killing her. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Her body was then thrown from a high-rise building. [7] [10] [11] [12]

Security agents later pressured Haghi's family to say that she had intentionally fallen from the building in an act of suicide. [3] [10] [13] [14] [15] The government had made similar claims following the deaths of other protesters. [16] After her family refused to accept the suicide story, her father, Rajab Haghi, was detained by the security forces. [3] [7] To put pressure on Haghi's family, government forces kept her body for two days. [3]

Iranian state-affiliated media published a video recorded by a security camera of a building and claimed that Aylar Haghi fell into a pit and lost her life shortly after getting out of the car. [10] However, in this video, only one woman is seen getting out of the car. [10] And it is impossible to identify the woman whose face is not even visible in the video. [17] [18]

Burial

Haghi's family wanted to bury her in Malekan, where she was born, but they were not allowed to do so. [19] Haghi's father, Rajab Haghi, was pressured to hold the funeral ceremony in Tabriz quietly and not publicize it. [4] [19] Nevertheless, the news became public [4] and a large number of citizens attended the funeral. [17] The funeral took place on November 18, 2022, at the Vadi-e Rahmat cemetery of Tabriz. [17] Citizens participating in the funeral chanted slogans against Iran, [17] [20] [21] such as "We are all Aylars, the struggle continues", [22] [23] "Freedom, justice, the national government" [17] The security forces attacked the citizens gathered in the cemetery and killed them. removed from the area [17] [24] [25] and arrested several people. [26] In addition, Professor Shamsi Abbasalizadeh of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences was suspended for attending Haghi's funeral. [27]

On December 27, 2022, the 40-day memorial ceremony for Aylar Haghi took place. [28] Participants at the ceremony chanted anti-government slogans [29] such as "We are all Aylar, we demand freedom," "Azerbaijan doesn’t sleep", Aylar's blood does not go in vain," "Khamenei is a murderer, the government is untrustworthy," and "Death to the dictator". [29] Haghi's father also made a speech during the ceremony. [18] Subsequently, security forces intervened in the ceremony, resulting in a confrontation between the participants and the security forces [29] [30] in which security forces beat attendees with batons. Haghi's parents and several others were arrested. [18] [29] [31]

Legacy

Aylar Haghi's killing escalated protests in East Azerbaijan province. [32] [33] Strong protests and demonstrations took place in Tabriz, Binab, and Malekan, where Haghi was born. [34] [33] Several protestors were arrested during these protests. [33] [34] Medical students from Tabriz Azad University also organized demonstrations following Haghi's killing. [35] [36] [37] [38]

On November 28, 2022, young girls in Azerbaijan organized a flash mob in memory of those fighting for women's rights in Iran and the Azerbaijani girls killed there, including Hadis Najafi, Asra Panahi, and Aylar Haghi. [39] [40] [41] [42] At the end of the flash mob, images of Haghi and other slain Azerbaijanis were displayed, accompanied by the message "We know, we are with you!". [43]

On February 20, 2023, slogans like "Aylar Haghi," "You can erase our slogans from walls, not the traces of blood," "Death to Khamenei," and "Death to the dictator" were written on the walls of streets in Tabriz. [44] [45]

Alireza Farshi a South Azerbaijani national cultural activist. He was arrested by Iranian security forces along with other national activists for attending the International Mother Language Day celebrations in Tehran on February 21, 2014. He was later sentenced to 15 years in prison and two years in exile in the city of Bagh-e Malek in Khuzestan province. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Mahsa Amini protests</span> Iranian protest movement since September 2022

Civil unrest and protests against the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran associated with the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini began on 16 September 2022 and carried on into 2023, but were said to have "dwindled" or "died down" by spring of 2023. As of September 2023, the "ruling elite" of Iran was said to remain "deeply entrenched" in power. The protests were described as "unlike any the country had seen before", the "biggest challenge" to the government, and "most widespread revolt", since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

This is a broad timeline of the ongoing series of protests against the government of Iran, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on 16 September 2022. Amini had fallen into a coma after having been detained by the Guidance Patrol, allegedly for wearing an "improper" hijab—in violation of Iran's mandatory hijab law—while visiting Tehran from Saqqez.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Death of Asra Panahi</span> Iranian girl killed during the Mahsa Amini protests in 2022

On 12 October 2022, Iranian teenager Asra Panahi was killed during the Mahsa Amini protests in the city of Ardabil. She was among a group of students at Shahed Girls High School who are reported to have refused to join a pro-government demonstration and perform the "Salam Farmandeh" song. The students are reported to have been beaten by plainclothes security forces summoned to the school. Panahi died at Fatemi Hospital in Ardabil after sustaining severe injuries.

Armita Abbasi is an Iranian protester, who was arrested on October 10, 2022, in Karaj, Iran by the Islamic Republic of Iran's forces amid Iran's nationwide protests. A week after her arrest, she experienced a serious medical condition that was reported by the hospital medical staff and by American newspaper CNN as multiple sexual assaults, this was later disputed by the Iranian government and Iranian newspapers, which reported the medical condition as intestinal issues. Abbasi was allegedly abducted by government security forces from the hospital. Her case has received attention from the international media, and has brought attention to sexual violence and repression in Iranian prisons. As of February 2023, she was released from prison.

The ongoing Mahsa Amini protests broke out following the death of Mahsa Amini while she was under arrest by the Guidance Patrol of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Reactions to her death and the following crackdown on protestors by law enforcement are both domestic and international.

The 2021 Iranian water protests were a series of protests by Iranians against water shortages in Khuzestan province during the summer. Protests broke out on 15 July 2021 due to the ongoing water crisis in Iran but spread across the country to other provinces and cities where people organised rallies in solidarity with Khuzestan, including Tehran, Kermanshah, Isfahan, Bushehr, Lorestan, Kurdistan, East Azerbaijan, North Khorasan and Alborz. Protests were soon dubbed 'The Uprising of the Thirsty" and turned violent as police forces attempted to suppress them due to demands for the end of the current regime. Casualties were recorded both amongst police forces and civilian demonstrators. Protests in Khuzestan lasted for around 10 days and were predominantly urban. The last large-scale demonstration in solidarity with Khuzestan took place on 31 July in Tehran. The violent nature of the protests received a lot media-attention and various government officials made statements promising extended and specific support to the region. This included releasing more water from Karkheh Dam in northern Khuzestan and sending emergency water tanks to most affected regions.

Kian Pirfalak was a nine-year-old Iranian boy who was killed in Izeh during the crackdown on the Mahsa Amini protests. He was shot by government security forces while sitting in his parents' vehicle during the attack on Izeh market. His father, Meysam Pirfalak, was critically injured in the assault and was hospitalized.

1978 Tabriz protests refers to the events occurred 40 days after 1978 Qom protests, on 18 February 1978. Several clerics in Qom and other major cities across Iran announced the 40th-day commemoration for those killed during the Qom incidents. The most prominent of the developments occurred in Tabriz. Also, announcements were published in universities a few days before the 40th-day commemoration of the events in Qom, inviting students and professors to close the university and join the demonstrators.
