Bhagwan Das Goenka was the only son of Ramnath Goenka, a newspaper baron of India. He was a manager of The Indian Express and had been described as the "inveterate foe" of the Nehru family".^[1]

Ramnath Goenka (1904–1991) was an Indian newspaper publisher. He launched The Indian Express in 1932 and created the Indian Express Group with various English and regional language publications. In 2000, India Today magazine, named him amongst their list of "100 People Who Shaped India". The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, named after Ramnath Goenka, have become one of the most prestigious award functions for Indian journalists.

<i>The Indian Express</i> daily broadsheet newspaper in India

The Indian Express is an English-language Indian daily newspaper. It is published in Mumbai by Indian Express Group. In 1999, eight years after the group's founder Ramnath Goenka's death in 1991, the group was split between the family members. The southern editions took the name The New Indian Express, while the northern editions, based in Mumbai, retained the original Indian Express name, with "The" prefixed to the title.

His wife, Saroj, is the daughter of Shreyans Prasad Jain,^[2] after whom the SP Jain College in Mumbai is named. She is thus a first cousin of Ashok Kumar Jain, whose sons own the Times of India. The couple were the parents of three daughters, namely Arati Agarwal, Ritu Goenka and Kavita Singhania. The youngest daughter, Kavita, is the wife of Yadupati Singhania, a member of the JK Singhania family.

Sahu Shreyans Prasad Jain (1908–1992) was an Indian businessman, parliamentarian and a prominent member of the Jain community. He was the brother of notable businessman and philanthropist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain. He was awarded Padma Bhushan for social work in 1988.

S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is a constituent business school of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. SPJIMR sits on a 45-acre campus in the western suburbs of Andheri in Mumbai. The Institute has an annual intake of some 700 students under various programmes. Its oldest programme is the two year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM).

Ashok Jain was an Indian industrialist and philanthropist, who was the Chairman of India's largest media group, Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd., parent company of The Times of India and other large newspapers.

Death

Goenka died as a result of a Cardiac arrest in 1979. He was survived by his father, wife and three daughters. In his memory, the "B.D. Goenka award" was established in 1979 by his father, Ramnath Goenka, to recognise contributions made by individuals in building and furthering the cause of journalism.

Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of blood flow resulting from the failure of the heart to effectively pump. Signs include loss of consciousness and abnormal or absent breathing. Some individuals may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or nausea before cardiac arrest. If not treated within minutes, it typically leads to death.

Mint is an Indian financial daily newspaper published by HT Media, a Delhi-based media group which is controlled by the KK Birla family and also publishes Hindustan Times. It mostly targets readers who are business executives and policy makers. It has been in circulation since 2007.

Keshav Prasad Goenka was an Indian businessman, industrialist, and one of the leaders among the earlier generations of the Goenka business family. His father, Badridas Goenka, was the nephew of Ramdutt Goenka, the founder of the Group. He was credited with contributions in expanding the business group by acquisitions, such as those of Duncan Brothers and Octavius Steel, two British trading houses and several other business houses. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1969, for his contributions to Indian industry. Goenka, a Marwari by birth, was married to Rukmani Devi, and the couple had three sons and two daughters. R. P. Goenka, the eldest among sons, was the founder of RPG Group.

Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards are one the most prestigious awards in India in the field of journalism. Named after Ramnath Goenka, the awards have been held annually since 2006, with the 12th edition being held in 2017. The awards are given for both print journalism as well as broadcast journalism, with a total of 25 different prizes being awarded in 2017 for excellence in journalism during 2016.

Viveck Goenka is the Chairman, Managing Director and Editorial Director of the Indian Express Group. The newspapers included in the Indian Express Group include the flagship newspaper, The Indian Express, business and economy daily Financial Express; Marathi daily; Loksatta and Jansatta in Hindi. Online, the group is today the third largest news group in the country.
