BAF Base Cox's Bazar is a Bangladeshi Air Force base located at Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh. [1] It is situated near to the Cox's Bazar Airport.

History

On 27 December 2010, Sheikh Hasina, who was prime minister of the country that time, informed that the government would start the construction of an airbase in Cox's Bazar soon to protect the country’s maritime boundary and military establishments in the city. [2] The airbase was inaugurated by her on 3 April 2011. [3] A YLC-6 Radar was included to its radar section on 11 November 2015. [4] On 18 December 2019, its name was changed after Sheikh Hasina. [5] During Cyclone Sitrang in 2022, the air base was used as a shelter for flood victims in the city. [6]

Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.

BAF Station Lalmonirhat or commonly known as Lalmonirhat Airport is a one of nine Bangladeshi Air Force bases is located near Lalmonirhat, at the north side border of Bangladesh. Once, it was the second biggest and largest airport in Asia. It was built in 1931 as a military airbase. During the Second World War (1939-1945), the Allied Forces used it as a forward airbase for its operations in Burma and other countries of southeast Asia. Presently, Lalmonirhat aerodrome is under the possession of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF). Now, the airport given to Bangladesh Aerospace and Aviation University to make it a permanent campus.

BAF Station Shamshernagar or BAF Station Moulvibazar is a one of nine Bangladeshi Air Force bases and a former public airport located 17 kilometres (11 mi) southeast of the town of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh. It is the only airport in Sylhet Division other than the Osmani International Airport. Due to the short length of the runway it is restricted to STOL aircraft. As of July 2015, no scheduled passenger flights serve the airport, but civil air operations are allowed with prior approval.
