BAF Base Cox's Bazar is a Bangladeshi Air Force base located at Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh. [1] It is situated near to the Cox's Bazar Airport.

History

On 27 December 2010, Sheikh Hasina, who was prime minister of the country that time, informed that the government would start the construction of an airbase in Cox's Bazar soon to protect the country’s maritime boundary and military establishments in the city. [2] The airbase was inaugurated by her on 3 April 2011. [3] A YLC-6 Radar was included to its radar section on 11 November 2015. [4] On 18 December 2019, its name was changed after Sheikh Hasina. [5] During Cyclone Sitrang in 2022, the air base was used as a shelter for flood victims in the city. [6]

Furthermore, the BAF has a territorial role in providing tactical and strategic air transport and logistics capability for the country.

Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She has remained in the position of prime minister for about 15 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she has become the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following a series of violent protests by the students in 2024.

The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to defend the land of Bangladesh from any external attack. Control of personnel and operations is administered by the Army Headquarters, Dhaka Cantonment. The Bangladesh Army is also constitutionally obligated to assist the government, during times of domestic national emergency e.g. the army helps people during any natural calamity. Jashore Airport is a domestic airport in Jashore, Bangladesh that is operated and maintained by the Civil Aviation Authority. It is also used by the Bangladesh Air Force as part of BAF Matiur Rahman Base and training airfield for the Bangladesh Air Force Academy. Currently it has seven daily flights to Dhaka and a weekly flight to Cox's Bazar. It is the only operational airport of the Khulna Division and the fifth busiest airport of Bangladesh.

Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernization program which began in 2009 and was revised in 2017. It was designed to enhance the capabilities of three service branches of Bangladesh Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernization program is the reformation of the military organization, expansion of the forces, the transformation of the indigenous defense sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons. The requirement for modernization was realized in the aftermath of 2008 Bangladesh–Myanmar naval standoff later resulting in Bangladesh's favour. One of the primary objectives of the modernization program is to develop a three-dimensional force capable of conducting multi-platform warfare.
