Brief description

BT-7274 is a Vanguard-class Titan; specifically, the first of his class, constructed by the Militia and piloted by Jack Cooper. Although he appears only in Titanfall 2 and Titanfall: Assault, he is widely regarded as the most iconic character in the Titanfall franchise. [2]

The Titan stands out due to his advanced artificial intelligence, a defining feature of Vanguard-class Titans that other Titan classes do not possess. This allows him to bond more effectively with his Pilot and develop a distinct personality and identity.

Appearances prior to Titanfall 2

BT is known to have appeared on Planet Victor during Operation Fracture, a battle preceding the Battle of Typhon, in which the Militia fought against the IMC, before bonding with Jack Cooper. At that time, Cooper served as a Militia rifleman, while BT’s Pilot was Captain Tai Lastimosa of the Militia Special Recon Squadron (SRS).

During the operation, Cooper demonstrated exceptional skill as a rifleman, drawing the captain’s attention. However, by the end of Operation Fracture, the rifleman suffered cognitive damage. Lastimosa saved Cooper’s life and provided him with advanced Pilot training in a simulation pod, despite not being authorized to do so — a decision that would later prove decisive for subsequent events. [3]

Story in Titanfall 2

Before bonding with Cooper

At the beginning of Titanfall 2, Cooper is trained by Lastimosa in a Pilot training pod aboard the ship James MacAllan, en route to Planet Typhon. After Cooper completes his Pilot training, Lastimosa introduces him to BT, the first Titan constructed by the Militia. [4] The captain is about to teach the rifleman how to pilot his assigned Titan, FS-1041, also Vanguard-class, when the ship is attacked by the IMC, forcing them to halt the training. Cooper evacuates the ship in an emergency pod and crash-lands directly on the planet.

Cooper arrives on the battlefield on Planet Typhon (spelled Typhon in English) as a rifleman. After eliminating several waves of enemy forces, he is attacked by an IMC Tone-class Titan. At the critical moment, Lastimosa arrives with BT, once again saving the rifleman’s life. However, Lastimosa is attacked by the Apex Predators, a mercenary faction allied with the IMC. Lastimosa is defeated, and BT loses two Titan batteries in the engagement.

Following the battle, Cooper remains unconscious for an indefinite period. Upon awakening, he witnesses Lastimosa exiting BT, gravely wounded. Before dying, the captain transfers his Pilot gear and authorizes Cooper as BT’s new Pilot.

Cooper as Acting Pilot

After Lastimosa’s death, Cooper retrieves two Titan batteries from the wreckage of the James MacAllan in order to restore sufficient power to BT. The Titan allows the Acting Pilot to assume control and informs him that they must continue Lastimosa’s original mission: rendezvous with Major Anderson of the SRS.

BT and Cooper travel to the designated coordinates of Anderson’s rendezvous point. Upon arrival, they discover that the major has died and left behind an unfinished investigation of the site. The rendezvous location is revealed to be an abandoned IMC ARES Division research facility, the purpose of which is unknown to the Militia. The facility contains unexplained temporal fractures.

BT assists Cooper in recovering Anderson’s wrist-mounted device, the Time Gauntlet (Operation Grizzly device), which enables the Pilot to shift between two separate timelines.

After completing Anderson’s investigation, BT and Cooper discover that the IMC is constructing a superweapon known as the Fold Weapon [5] , capable of destroying entire planets. Its intended target is Harmony, a Militia-controlled planet and headquarters with a population of approximately 40 million people. The weapon is powered by an energy source of unknown origin known as the Ark, discovered by General Marder of the IMC ARES Division. A prototype of the Fold Weapon had previously destroyed Typhon’s moon in a single shot, which explains why the moon appears shattered in the game’s opening cinematic. [5]

For this reason, BT and Cooper proceed immediately to a nearby IMC beacon in order to hack it and transmit all obtained intelligence regarding the Ark and the IMC to the Militia.

Cooper as Official Pilot

After transmitting the data, Militia forces arrive at the beacon’s location. Commander Sarah Briggs of the Marauder Corps initially intends to link BT with a new, fully qualified Pilot, as Cooper held only the title of Acting Pilot. Lastimosa had authorized Cooper solely because no alternative Militia forces were present. However, BT formally objects, stating that Cooper “is my Pilot,” and argues that together they have operated more efficiently than 90% of Militia Pilots.

Commander Briggs ultimately allows BT to maintain his neural link with Cooper, officially promoting him to full Pilot status.

Subsequently, BT and Cooper join the Militia fleet in a desperate large-scale assault against the IMC. After deployment in enemy territory, Militia forces infiltrate the IMC installation where the Ark is located. However, the IMC successfully transports the Ark aboard the IMS Draconis before the Militia can secure it. The Militia commandeers IMC vessels to pursue the Draconis.

BT and Cooper board a Widow-class dropship. After the destruction of the IMS Thermopylae, they are attacked by Viper of the Apex Predators, piloting a Northstar-class Titan. Viper shoots down their ship with missile fire. The 6-4, a Militia-allied faction, arrives in time to extract BT and Cooper mid-air aboard a ship piloted by Barker, a contractor working for the Militia.

In order to reach the Draconis, BT launches Cooper onto another 6-4 ship. From there, Cooper boards the IMS Malta, which is trailing the target. With assistance from the 6-4, Cooper gains control of the ship using his Data Knife. After disabling its defensive cannons, Barker positions his ship so that BT can reunite with Cooper.

Viper reappears and engages BT and Cooper in combat to prevent them from reaching the Ark. After defeating Viper, they successfully board the Draconis and locate the Ark. BT secures the Ark’s energy core inside his chassis.

While attempting to escape, an explosion traps them inside as the ship loses altitude. BT shields Cooper with his own body during the crash.

Following the crash, Kuben Blisk, leader of the Apex Predators, and Slone recover the Ark and destroy BT’s chassis. Cooper again loses consciousness. Upon awakening, BT transfers his SERE Kit (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) and his data core to Cooper, as he is no longer operational.

Using the supplied equipment, Cooper escapes and is later provided with the last remaining Militia Vanguard Titan chassis, FS-1041. Cooper inserts BT’s data core into the new chassis, restoring him.

In the final confrontation, BT and Cooper defeat Slone and reach the Fold Weapon. A violent energy discharge incapacitates BT. Kuben Blisk reappears but chooses not to intervene, as eliminating them is not part of his contract and the destruction of the Fold Weapon would benefit him financially in the long term.

With BT severely damaged, Cooper manually moves the Titan toward the Ark, intending to sacrifice both of them. However, at the last moment, BT opens the cockpit and ejects Cooper away from the Ark, sacrificing himself. The Ark and the Fold Weapon are destroyed. Cooper is rescued by Barker and Commander Briggs as Typhon subsequently explodes due to the weapon’s destruction. The Militia achieves its objective.

After BT-7274’s sacrifice

Following the events of Titanfall 2, Jack Cooper is assigned a new Titan and continues operating with the Marauder Corps. However, BT-7274’s ultimate fate remains uncertain.

In the post-credits scene, Cooper’s helmet emits Morse code pulses spelling “Jack?”, suggesting that BT may still be active in some form.

One prevalent theory suggests that BT transferred a portion of his AI into Cooper’s helmet, similar to how he fragmented his intelligence earlier in the IMC facility to maintain uninterrupted communication across temporal shifts.

Another hypothesis proposes that the Ark displaced BT to an unknown location.

In any case, BT-7274’s whereabouts and the current status of his AI remain unknown. Within the Titanfall universe, he is remembered by Cooper and the Militia as one of the primary figures responsible for saving approximately 40 million lives on Harmony.
