Bachtiar Karim (born November 5, 1957) is an Indonesian businessman and palm oil tycoon [1] [2] He is the chairman of Musim Mas, one of the world's leading palm oil conglomerates headquartered in Singapore. [3] [4] Karim was listed as Indonesia's #10 richest man, with a net-worth of $3.5B in 2021. [5] [4] He was also listed in Tatler as one of Asia's Most Influential in 2021 [6]

Education

He studied in Singapore at the Hwa Chong Junior College and completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. [7]

Notable transactions

In 2019, Karim bought over the entire Darby Park Executive Suites (a 6-story serviced residence building in Singapore) in prime area Orange Grove near Orchard Road for $160 million from Royal Group Holdings Pte Ltd, one of the largest private property transactions in Singapore that year. [8] His family's real estate investment company, Invictus Developments, is redeveloping the plot of land under the Standard Hotels chain into a luxury boutique 143-room hotel, slated to be open in 2023. [9]

In 2022, Karim's family bought the House of Tan Yeok Nee (a mansion building designated as a national monument of Singapore) in the Museum Planning Area through a competitive Expression of Interest exercise (EOI). [10] It is one of just five privately-owned Commercial national monuments. Chayadi Karim, the spokesperson of the Karim family, said they are "exploring various investment strategies for ... this conservation marvel." [11] Currently, it remains the campus of Amity Global Institute.

Family

His father Anwar Karim founded the Nam Cheong Soap Factory in Medan in 1932. [12] He has three brothers: Burhan Karim, Bahari Karim, Bachrum Karim. I His family founded an entrepreneur center, which operates in the University of North Sumatra. [12]

Philanthropy

Karim is actively involved in philanthropy, having his own entrepreneur and training center in Medan, and having donated back to his alma mater, the NUS Business School. [13]

Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat was a banker and hotel owner, who, with an estimated fortune of S$4.3 billion (US$3,195,953,500), was the wealthiest man in Singapore at one point. He owned the Goodwood Group of boutique hotels in London and Singapore and was the largest single shareholder of the British bank Standard Chartered. The bulk of his fortune came from shares in Standard Chartered, which he bought up in the 1980s to help thwart Lloyds Bank's proposed acquisition which many financiers deemed hostile. The Goodwood Park Hotel in Singapore, built in 1900, is a restored historic landmark.

Eka Tjipta Widjaja, born Oei Ek Tjong, was an Indonesian business magnate who founded the Sinar Mas Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Indonesia. After immigrating to Indonesia with his family when he was a child, Widjaja became a member of the PCC, traded copra in the mid-1950s, moved into the palm oil industry soon after, started a paper factory in the 1970s, and then entered financial services in the 1980s. Sukanto Tanoto, born Tan Kang Hoo is an Indonesian businessman primarily involved in resources-based manufacturing. After starting as a supplier of equipment and materials for the state-owned oil firm Pertamina, Tanoto moved into the forest industry in 1973. Major China Dato' Tan Hiok Nee, also known as Tan Yeok Nee, was the leader of the Ngee Heng Kongsi of Johor, succeeding Tan Kee Soon in circa 1864, he transformed the Ngee Heng Kongsi of Johor from a quasi-military revolutionary brotherhood, based in the rural settlement of Kangkar Tebrau, into an organisation of kapitans, kangchus, and revenue farmers, based in the state capital of Johor Bahru. Bumitama Agri Ltd is the Singapore holding company of subsidiary Bumitama Gunajaya Agro. Bumitama is an Indonesian oil palm plantation company which cultivates oil palm trees and produces crude palm oil (CPO). It was established in 1996 by the Harita Group with its first acquisition of land in Central Kalimantan. Bumitama owns roughly 230,000 hectares and has planted 187,000 hectares of oil palm trees, primarily in Central and West Kalimantan.
