The Judo competition at the 1972 Summer Olympics was the return of the sport following its absence at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Medals were awarded in six weight classes, and competition was restricted to men only. Among the highlights was Wim Ruska of the Netherlands winning gold medals in both the heavyweight and open class competition, becoming the first judoka to win two Olympic gold medals.
Alfred Harold Douglas Rogers was a Canadian Olympic competitor in judo, and the first Canadian to win an Olympic medal in the sport. He was an honoured member in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. His best results were a silver medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and a gold medal at the Pan American Games, in 1967. He was a student of Masahiko Kimura.
Willem "Wim" Ruska was a Dutch judoka and professional wrestler. He is the first athlete to win two gold medals in Judo in one Olympics – in the heavyweight and absolute categories in 1972.
Estela Rodríguez Villanueva was a Cuban judoka. She won silver medals at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, both in the Half Heavyweight category. She returned a positive test to banned diuretic drug called furosemide at the 1996 Olympics, but was only issued with a reprimand, and allowed to keep her medals. Rodríguez died in Havana on 10 April 2022, at the age of 54.
Judo was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan. After not being included in 1968, judo has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad since then. Only male judoka participated until the 1988 Summer Olympics, when women's judo was organized as a demonstration sport. Women judoka were first awarded medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Abdullo Tangriev is an Uzbek judoka. He won a silver medal in the +100 kg category at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Haiti sent a delegation to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, from August 8 to August 24, 2008. Its participation in Beijing marked its seventh consecutive appearance at the summer Olympics and its fourteenth appearance overall, with its first being at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. The Haitian Olympic team included seven athletes participating in track and field, boxing, and judo. More women participated for Haiti in 2008 than at any single Olympic games prior. Although Pierre and Dorival advanced to quarterfinals in their events, there were no Haitian medalists in Beijing. Brutus carried his country's flag at the ceremonies.
Marcus Victor Jan Nyman is a Swedish retired judoka. He competed in the men's −90 kg judo event. In his olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics he was eliminated after losing his first match. In the 2016 Summer Olympics he won three of five matches and finished fifth. At the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Olympics, Nyman was elimanted in the second round. Nyman won the gold medal at the 2010 European Judo Championships and the bronze medal at the 2011 and 2016 Championships. He also finished third at the World Championships in 2021 and 2023.
The men's 63 kg competition in judo at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany was held at Judo and Wrestling Hall. In the gold medal match Bakhvain Buyadda of Mongolia, an unknown and very inexperienced judoka, lost to Takao Kawaguchi. Several days later, Buyadda became the first Olympic judoka with a positive result for doping. His medal was removed, but the other athletes were not moved and second place is considered vacant.
Orkhan Safarov is an Azerbaijani judoka. He won a bronze at the 2013 World Judo Championships in the –60 kg category.
Nauru competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. The country's participation in Brazil was its sixth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Nauru's delegation included two participants: Ovini Uera, a judoka in the men's middleweight judo category; and Elson Brechtefeld in the men's 56 kg weightlifting competition. Uera qualified as Nauru's top-ranked judoka, in the IJF World Ranking List through a quota slot from the Oceania Judo Union. Brechtefeld qualified by grant from the International Weightlifting Federation of an unused quota place. Uera was eliminated by Varlam Liparteliani in the round of 16 and Brechtefeld finished 15th in his event.
Ricardo Willy Elmont was a Surinamese judoka, who represented his country at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
