Balkans is an American indie rock band from Atlanta, Georgia.

History

Balkans formed in 2008 in the suburbs of Atlanta by childhood and high school friends. Frankie Broyles and Woodbury (Woody) Shortridge were childhood neighbors, and they started a band in the third grade. Woody met Stanley Vergilis in middle school, and the group of them met Brett Miller in their sophomore year in high school. Their music is said to straddle a delicious and intriguing position somewhere in-between pop and punk rock. [1]

Between 2008 and 2010 Balkans released three 7″ singles through various local labels. Their first was a 7" split from local ATL label Die Indy Records with a band called Trial by fire., [2] most recently, ‘Zebra Print’ and ‘Georganne’ came out on their present Atlanta based label Double Phantom Records (home to The Selmanaires, Carnivores, and Roman Photos). [3] The singles raised attention locally from Atlanta's Creative Loafing naming one single the No.1 Atlanta Release of 2009. [4] During this period the Band embarked on D.I.Y tours along the East Coast, frequenting warehouse type venues in Brooklyn, New York.

On February 22, 2011 the band released their fourth 7" single ‘Edita V’ which has been described as high energy punk, referencing bands such as Television with angular riffs and energetic vocals. [1] The single was followed up by their self-titled debut LP in the US and UK on May 10, 2011. Both releases created national and international attention from taste-maker blogs such as Altered Zones, Vice and NPR. As well as publications The Fader, Atrocker, and Spin Magazine with the latter naming Balkans one of the “5 Best New Artists for June” [5]

In support of their debut LP, In 2011, Balkans announced a string of tour dates covering the United States and Canada via the band's blog, [6] sharing the stage with Atlas Sound, PS I Love You, Crystal Antlers, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

After a sold out New Year's Eve show in Atlanta, Balkans announced they were "put on hold indefinitely" via their blog. Frankie Broyles continued to tour as a solo act. [6] Broyles went on to join Deerhunter on guitar in 2013 with the release of their LP Monomania. [7] Woodbury Shortridge joined friend Phil Jones in the band Dog Bite which signed to Carpark Records in 2012. Dog Bite's album Velvet Changes was released the following year and supported by tours alongside Washed Out and Toro Y Moi. [8]

In 2019 Balkans returned from hiatus to perform a sold out show at Los Angeles theater El Cid and announced plans for an accompanying New York City performance at the Market Hotel in April 2020. [9]

<i>Cryptograms</i> (album) 2007 studio album by Deerhunter

Cryptograms is the second album from Atlanta, Georgia-based indie rock group Deerhunter, released through Kranky on January 29, 2007 on CD and vinyl. Following the 2005 release of its first full-length album Turn It Up Faggot, Deerhunter began recording material for its next record at Rare Book Room studio in New York. This initial recording session failed, due to the physical and mental state of lead singer Bradford Cox, as well as malfunctioning equipment in the studio. The band returned to Atlanta, only giving recording a second try after encouragement from members of the band Liars. The final version of Cryptograms was recorded in two separate day-long sessions, months apart, resulting in two musically distinct parts—the first includes more ambient music while the second contains more pop music elements. Cox sang most of the record's lyrics in a stream-of-consciousness manner; they include themes of death, companionship, and Cox's experiences with his genetic disorder Marfan syndrome. Cryptograms was generally well received by critics, and several publications placed the album on their lists of the top albums of 2007.

HOSS Records is an experimental independent record label. HOSS was formed in 2004 and is currently based out of Brooklyn, New York, and Atlanta, Georgia. The label was active in the Baltimore, Maryland, music scene between 2007 and 2010 before entering "a year and a half spent lying in semi-limbo". As of 2011, the label is once again active.

Carnivores is an indie rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2009 by Philip Frobos, Nathaniel Higgins, and Caitlin Lang. Their musical style has been described as belonging to the noise pop genre. In 2010 Ross Politi joined on drums, later transitioning to second guitar with Billy Mitchell on drums. They released their first album, All Night Dead USA on Double Phantom Records in 2010. In 2011 they toured with The Black Lips, whose lead singer, Cole Alexander Is featured on a track off their latest album, Second Impulse. They have collaborated with both Bradford Cox and Frankie Broyles past member of Deerhunter on separate occasions and toured with Cox's solo project, Atlas Sound as well as Franz Ferdinand in 2012. In 2013 they signed with Army of Bad Luck Records, the Atlanta-based record company started by former Deerhunter bassist Josh Fauver.

Spirits and the Melchizedek Children is a psychedelic shoegaze band from Atlanta, GA. They have been described by The A.V. Club as the "Southern Sigur Rós."

<i>Fading Frontier</i> 2015 studio album by Deerhunter

Fading Frontier is the seventh studio album by the American indie rock band Deerhunter, released on October 16, 2015 on 4AD. Produced by Ben H. Allen, who had previously worked with the band on Halcyon Digest (2010), and the band itself, the album was preceded by the singles "Snakeskin", "Breaker" and "Living My Life".

Lyonnais is an experimental rock band based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The band consists of Farbod Kokabi, Farzad Moghaddam, Lee Tesche, and TJ Blake.
