Balvinder Sopal (born 4 December 1978) is an English actress, whose acting career has spanned over two decades. She rose to prominence for her portrayal as Suki Panesar-Unwin in the BBC soap opera EastEnders since January 2020. Sopal has also appeared in other British soap operas including Emmerdale , Coronation Street , Doctors and Hollyoaks , and voiced Simran Kaur in the radio soap opera Silver Street from 2004 to 2010.

Early life

Balvinder Sopal was born on 4 December 1978 in Chatham, Medway. [1] [2] She is the eldest of four children and was brought up in Gillingham, Medway. [3]

She attended the University of Huddersfield. [3]

Career

Sopal made her professional acting debut as Bhelua in The Beautiful Violin at Oldham Coliseum Theatre in 2001. [4] She then went on to appear in stage productions such as Absent Friends , Relatively Speaking and The Tales of the Harrow. [5] [6] Sopal made her onscreen debut in a 2001 episode of the BBC series Kidhaar! as Reena directed by Kate Rowland. [5] From 2004 to 2010, she voiced Simran Kaur in the BBC Asian Network radio soap opera Silver Street . [7] [8] In 2008, she appeared in the BBC film White Girl as Fatima. [6]

From 2009 to 2018, Sopal made numerous appearances in four British television soap operas; Emmerdale , Coronation Street , Doctors and Hollyoaks . [9] [10] In December 2019, she was cast in her first regular role in the BBC soap opera EastEnders as Suki Panesar. [11] Her first scene aired on 27 January 2020. [11] Suki's most notable storyline includes her on-off affair with Eve Unwin (Heather Peace), which won several awards.

Nish Panesar is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Navin Chowdhry. After being mentioned multiple times beforehand, Nish made his first appearance in episode 6565, broadcast on 29 September 2022. It was confirmed that Chowdhry had begun filming before the announcement of his casting on 28 August 2022. Billed as "ice-cold" and "manipulative", Nish is introduced as the estranged mentally abusive and controlling husband of Suki Panesar and the father of Kheerat, Jags, Ash, and Vinny. He is later revealed to also be the father of Ravi Gulati in a twist. Since his introduction, Nish's storylines have focused on his attempts to rebuild relationships with his family, the crumbling of his marriage to Suki, a feud with Suki's lover Eve Unwin, being in a coma during "The Six" storyline, a fling with Kat Slater, suffering from viral myocarditis, learning the truth of The Six's murder and falsely confessing to the crime resulting in his arrest, and escaping from prison. Chowdhry made an unannounced return to the role in episode 7023, broadcast on 2 December. Nish's story sees him plot to ruin Eve and Suki's upcoming wedding. When the wedding arrives in episode 7041, broadcast on 1 January 2025, Nish tries to kill Denise and Eve, before revealing he plans to die with Suki. However, after Ravi learns Nish hurt Denise, he pushes Nish off the hotel balcony. In the following episode, broadcast on 2 January 2025, it was confirmed that Nish had been killed off, with his final scene showing him being zipped into a body bag.

She was portrayed as the protective mother of Kheerat, Jags, Vinny and Ash who believe that she always has the right answer. Prior to her arrival, it is confirmed that her relationship with Ash is severed due to disagreeing with her bisexuality. Her initial storyline sees her lying about having cancer to garner sympathy and get closer to her children. She was immediately well received by viewers and critics, with Inside Soap writing that Suki had reached "soap icon status in record time". Sopal was shocked by the praise that she and Suki had received from the beginning of her tenure.

Gurlaine Kaur Sidhu or Garcha is an English actress. On television, she is known for her role as Ash Panesar in the BBC One soap opera EastEnders (2019–2023).
