Barbara Zechmeister is a German operatic soprano and voice teacher. A member of the Oper Frankfurt from 1996, she has appeared in major European opera houses and international festivals. She has performed in world premieres, and in recitals and recordings. Zechmeister has been a voice teacher at Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium since 2005.

Career

Zechmeister studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Heidelberg/Mannheim, first music pedagogy with main subjects piano and voice, then for special exams in lied, concert and opera, and finally for the concert exam (Konzertexamen) with Eva-Maria Molnár and Rudolf Piernay. She took master classes with Judith Beckmann, Agnes Giebel, Geoffrey Parsons, Laura Sarti and Kurt Widmer. [1]

She has been a member of the Oper Frankfurt from 1996 when Sylvain Cambreling engaged her. [2] [3] She made her debut there as Laura in Verdi's Luisa Miller , followed by many Mozart roles such as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro , Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Despina in Così fan tutte . [2] She took part in world premieres at the house, in 2006 as Livia in Detlev Glanert's Caligula , [4] and in 2014 as one of the Sirens in Rolf Riehm's Sirenen . In 2019, she appeared as Graumann's wife in a new production of Franz Schreker's Der ferne Klang , staged by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Sebastian Weigle. [5] She performed the role of Mrs Gobineau in Menotti's The Medium at the Bockenheimer Depot, conducted by Nikolai Petersen. [6]

Zechmeister appeared as a guest at opera houses including the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Staatsoper Hannover, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Staatsoper Stuttgart, in Rouen and Lisbon, and at festivals such as the Ludwigsburg Festival and the Bregenz Festival. [3] At the 2004 Wexford Festival, she appeared as Clarissa in a recorded production of Die drei Pintos , a comic opera by Carl Maria von Weber completed by Gustav Mahler. [1] [7]

Zechmeister has been a teacher of voice at Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium since 2005. [1] She was awarded the title Kammersängerin in 2011. [3]

<i>Der ferne Klang</i> Opera by Franz Schreker

Der ferne Klang is an opera by Franz Schreker, set to his own libretto. Begun in 1903, it was first performed by the Oper Frankfurt on 18 August 1912. It was the composer's breakthrough to fame, and was frequently performed up until 1931, shortly after which the composer's music was proscribed by the Nazi regime. Largely forgotten after World War II, it has been revived by several opera companies in the 21st century.

Bernd Loebe is a German music journalist and opera manager. After working as a journalist with a focus on opera and voice for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Neue Musikzeitung, Opernwelt and Hessischer Rundfunk, he was artistic director of the opera house of Brussels, La Monnaie, from 1990, and has been Intendant of the Oper Frankfurt since 2002, where he encouraged a capable ensemble, international guest artists, and the production of rarely performed operas. Gösta Neuwirth is an Austrian musicologist, composer and academic teacher. He studied in Vienna and Berlin, where he wrote a dissertation on harmony in Franz Schreker's Der ferne Klang. He has taught at universities and music schools including the Musikhochschule Graz, University of Graz, Universität der Künste Berlin and University of Freiburg. His compositions include a string quartet and a chamber opera.

Giedrė Šlekytė is a Lithuanian conductor, who works in Europe with a focus on opera. After she was one of three conductors for the Young Conductor Award of the Salzburg Festival in 2015, she worked at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt for two seasons. She conducted Schreker's Die Gezeichneten at the Opernhaus Zürich, and Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites at the Oper Frankfurt in 2021.
