Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin Bil (born 3 February 1957) is a South Sudanese politician. He was appointed in April 2021 as the minister of Presidential Affairs in the office of the President as of 2022 replacing Nhial Deng Nhial. [1]
Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin is the former [2] [3] Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Cabinet of South Sudan. He was appointed to that position on 27 July 2013. [4]
He has held various positions in the Cabinet of South Sudan since independence in 2005. He was information minister from 2010 to 2013.
Dr. Benjamin has professional training in medicine and diplomacy. He studied Premedical Sciences at the University of Khartoum in 1965 and graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Cairo in 1970. He studied Hygiene and Tropical medicine at the London School of Hygiene &Tropical Medicine in 1983. At the Centre for African Reconnaissance (CARS),University of South Africa (UNISA),Pretoria South Africa in 2005,he studied Diplomacy and International Relations. He also attended the SPLM\SPLA Institute of Ideology and Strategic studies,Zink,Gambela,Ethiopia - 1984–1985. Before the Liberation struggle days,he worked in various Provincial and District hospitals in Wau and Yirol. He was also a Senior Registrar in General Surgery in both Khartoum and Omdurman University Teaching Hospitals.
Prior to joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin served in the same capacity in the ministries of Information and Broadcasting as well as Commerce and Industry (MCI) in the then Government of South Sudan (GOSS) up to June 2010. Previously,he was minister for Regional Cooperation (MRC) Government of South Sudan (GOSS) 2006-May 2009 Juba. He also served as the State Minister of International Cooperation,Government of National Unity,Khartoum,Sudan. 2005- 2006. He was an SPLM member in SPLM\Sudan Government Peace Talks- Nairobi 1989 and is an SPLM member of the National Liberation council up to date. He is also a Member of Parliament (MP) in the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly representing a Constituency in Jonglei State.
The Minister held various positions in the liberation struggle,including serving as SPLM\ SPLA Treasurer General for SPLM- London Committee 1983-1987 and SPLM representative to Southern African Countries (SADC),Harare,Zimbabwe 1988–2005. He was also the Special envoy for the SPLM\SPLA Chairman to Southern African countries from between 1991 and 2004. He held the position of Secretary of International Relations Representing SPLM in the Executive of National Democratic Alliance (NDA),2002–2005,and has been a member of national Liberation Council (NLC),SPLM to date.
Dr. John Garang De Mabior was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. From 1983 to 2005,he led the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement as a commander in chief during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks,from the comprehensive peace agreement of 2005 until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30,2005. A developmental economist by profession,Garang was one of the major influence on the movement that led to the foundation of South Sudan independence from the rule of the government of Omar Bashir the former president of Sudan (Khartoum).
Salva Kiir Mayardit,also known as Salva Kiir,is a South Sudanese politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence,he was the President of the Government of Southern Sudan,as well as First Vice President of Sudan,from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLM/A) in 2005,following the death of John Garang.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement is a political party in South Sudan. It was initially founded as the political wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Army in 1983. On January 9,2005 the SPLA,the SPLM and the Government of Sudan signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,ending the civil war. SPLM then obtained representation in the Government of Sudan,and was the main constituent of the Government of the then semi-autonomous Southern Sudan. When South Sudan became a sovereign state on 9 July 2011,SPLM became the ruling party of the new republic. SPLM branches in Sudan separated themselves from SPLM,forming the Sudan People's Liberation Movement–North. Further factionalism appeared as a result of the 2013–2014 South Sudanese Civil War,with President Salva Kiir leading the SPLM-Juba and former Vice President Riek Machar leading the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition.
Dr.Lam Akol Ajawin,is a South Sudanese politician of Shilluk descent. He is the current leader of National Democratic Movement (NDM) party. He is a former high-ranking official in the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA),and subsequently became the Foreign Minister of Sudan from September 2005 to October 2007,when the Khartoum government offered the SPLA several other key ministries as part of a peace agreement.

The mass media in South Sudan is underdeveloped compared to many other countries,including fellow East African states like Kenya,Tanzania,and Uganda. Poor transportation infrastructure and entrenched poverty in the country inhibit both the circulation of newspapers,particularly in states located far from the capital of Juba,and the ability of media outlets to maintain regular coverage of the entire country.
