Barnes Murphy (born in Sligo, Ireland), is a former Gaelic footballer who represented the Sligo county team during the 1970s and 1980s. Aside from winning a GAA All Stars Award in 1974, he won a Connacht Senior Football Championship medal with Sligo in 1975 when he both captained and coached Sligo the same year. Murphy played football for Connacht many times in his career and his talent was duly recognized by the Connacht Railway Cup management in 1976 when he was selected as the first and only Sligo man to captain his province. Murphy also enjoyed success at club level, winning five county championships (with Craomh Rua and St Mary's), five League medals (also with Craomh Rua and St Mary's), three Connacht club championships and, an All-Ireland 7s. [2] He also won Junior titles with St John's after the new club was formed when the old Sligo borough boundaries were further divided. To date, Murphy along with Mickey Kearins [3] are Sligo's most decorated and successful footballers ever.[ citation needed ]

Murphy lives in his native Sligo where he is still involved in club football. Barnes is featured in The Best of the West: GAA Greats of Connacht, a book by John Scally that features GAA's best players from the west of Ireland. [4] Mickey Kearins & Eamon O'Hara are also featured.[ citation needed ]

Mickey Kearins is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played at senior level for the Sligo county team for 17 years from 1961 until 1978.

Emlyn Mulligan is a Gaelic footballer from County Leitrim who plays for the Sligo based St Mary's club and formerly for the Leitrim county team. A top class free-taker, he scored 1–34 in the 2008 National Football League. The high point of his career came in captaining Leitrim to the FBD Insurance League in 2013 – though it a notable achievement in this case as it was only Leitrim's fourth ever trophy and their first since 1994. He is widely considered as one of the greatest ever players to grace the Connacht championship. He scored 3–8 in New York in 2013, described by experts as "some feat". He took a year out to go travelling ahead of Leitrim's 2015 campaign.

The Sligo county football team represents Sligo in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Sligo GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Connacht Senior Football Championship and the National Football League.

The Mayo county hurling team represents Mayo in hurling and is governed by Mayo GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the Christy Ring Cup and the National Hurling League. It formerly competed in the abolished Connacht Senior Hurling Championship.

James Kearins is a former Gaelic footballer. Kearins played for St Patrick's football club and was manager of the Sligo county team. Mickey Kearins is a brother of James Kearins.
