Basrizal Koto (born October 11, 1959 [1] in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra) is a businessman from Indonesia; the owner of a well-known Indonesian conglomerate. Usually addressed as "Basko", he is involved with media, printing, mining, livestock, hospitality, and property.
Koto was born in Kampung Ladang, Padang Pariaman, to parents Ali Absyar and Djaninar. His early life was poor, his family eating only once a day. Because of his difficult life, he stopped studying and migrated to Pekanbaru, Riau. His mother reminded him that if you goes to a foreign territory, he must be able to communicate, take advantage of opportunities, and work with a high commitment. He later moved his family to Riau.
Koto started with a Minang restaurant. He tried his hands at different professions, ranging from kernet, driver, caterer, tailor to finally becoming a car dealer. He currently manages about 15 companies and since 2006, is involved in coal mining, newspapers, cable TV and internet for whole of Sumatera.
Some of Koto's companies include PT Basko Minang Plaza (shopping centre), PT Cerya Riau Mandiri Printing (printing), PT Cerya Zico Utama (property), PT Bastara Jaya Muda (coal mining), PT Riau Agro Mandiri (livestock), PT Riau Agro Mandiri Perkasa (seedling, meat canning), PT Indonesian Mesh Network (cable TV and internet), and PT Best Western Hotel (hotel). He developed Best Western Hotel, the four-star hotel in Padang, with 198 rooms. [2]
Koto also owns Haluan Media Group, which include the oldest and one of the largest newspaper in West Sumatra, Haluan .
Minangkabau people, also known as Minang, are an Austronesian ethnic group native to the Minangkabau Highlands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The Minangkabau's West Sumatran homelands was the seat of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, believed by early historians to have been the cradle of the Malay race, and the location of the Padri War.

Rendang is a Minangkabau dish. It is a rich dish of meat that has been slow cooked and braised in a coconut milk seasoned with a herb and spice mixture until the liquids evaporate and the meat turns dark brown and tender, becoming caramelized and infused with rich flavours.
Pekanbaru is the capital city of the Indonesian province of Riau, and a major economic centre on the eastern side of Sumatra Island with its name derived from the Malay words for 'new market' . Sawahlunto is a city in Western Sumatra province, Indonesia, and lies 90 kilometres from Padang, the provincial capital. Sawahlunto is known as the site for the oldest coal mining site in Southeast Asia. Sawahlunto is geographically located in a narrow valley along the Bukit Barisan mountains, and surrounded by several hills, namely Bukit Polan, Bukit Pari, and Bukit Mato. The town has a land area of 273.45 sq. km, and had a population of 56,866 at the 2010 Census, 60,136 at the 2015 Census and 65,138 at the 2020 Census.
Kampar is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province of Indonesia. The regency formerly included a much larger part of Riau Province, but on 4 October 1999 the western districts were split off to form a separate Rokan Hulu Regency, and the eastern districts were split off to form a new Pelalawan Regency. It now has an area of 11,289.28 km2 and had a population of 686,204 at the 2010 Census, and 841,332 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 878,210. The administrative centre of the regency is located at Bangkinang town.

The Ganting Grand Mosque is a Sunni mosque located in Ganting, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Construction began in 1805, making it the oldest in Padang and one of the oldest in Indonesia. It is a Cultural Property of Indonesia.
Irwan Prayitno is an Indonesian politician who was serving as the governor of West Sumatra province. He was elected in the 2010 and 2015 election for the five-year period 2010–2015 and 2016–2021. Before his election as governor, he served as a member of Indonesia's Parliament (DPR-RI) from the election region of West Sumatra for three consecutive periods.
Bagindo Azizchan, was an Indonesian independence fighter and second Mayor of Padang after independence, inaugurated on 15 August 1946, replacing Abubakar Jaar. He died at the age of 36 after being involved in a battle against Dutch forces. His body was buried at the Bahagia Heroes Cemetery, Bukittinggi. On 9 November 2005, Bagindo Azizchan was declared a National Hero of Indonesia.
Irman Gusman is an Indonesian politician and businessman. He is a former speaker of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of Indonesia, who became the first Indonesian parliamentary leader to be elected for two consecutive terms. This earned him the nickname Pejuang daerah.
Burhanuddin Ulakan Pariaman, also known as Sheikh Burhanuddin Ulakan, was an Islamic cleric (ulama) from the Minangkabau region. He is regarded as the pioneer of Islamic propagators in West Sumatra. He is also known as a commanding figure of the Islamic movements against the Dutch colonization. Regarding his Islamic belief, he was a Sufi murshid belonging to the Shattari tariqa based in Minangkabau region.

Mahyuddin Datuk Sutan Maharadja was a Minangkabau journalist, intellectual, activist and newspaper editor active in the Dutch East Indies. He is considered to be one of the fathers of modern Indonesian journalism and was a key figure in West Sumatran politics from the 1890s to 1921.
Zainal Bakar was an Indonesian politician and bureaucrat who served as the governor of West Sumatra between 2000 and 2005. Prior to becoming governor, he served as the regent of Padang Pariaman between 1990 and 1993, and had been part of the province's bureaucracy since 1967.
Marawa is a tricolour flag that consists of three vertical charts that feature the colours of the Minangkabau culture: black, red, and gold. It is not known for sure when this flag was first used, but it was officially adopted as the flag of the Pagaruyung Kingdom since its founding in 1347. This flag was also adopted by other kingdoms of the Minangkabau rantau such as the Inderapura Kingdom. A derivative of the flag is also currently used by Negeri Sembilan, a state in Malaysia with historical and cultural connections with the kingdom.
