The Basta Movement (Portuguese : Movimento Basta!) is a political party in São Tomé and Príncipe. The party was created on June 7, 2022. [1] They ran in the 2022 São Tomé and Príncipe legislative elections and won a total of 6,874 votes, making the party the third largest in the country. [2] During this election candidates from the Democratic Convergence Party (PCD) joined the movement and ran under its banner. [1] [3] The leader of the party is Salvador Ramos. [4]

Shortly after the constitution took effect, the National Assembly formally legalized opposition parties. Independent candidates also were permitted to participate in the January 1991 legislative elections.

Presidential elections were held in São Tomé and Príncipe in 2011, the first round beginning on 17 July 2011 with a run-off held on 7 August 2011. The final result saw former president Manuel Pinto da Costa, aged 74, elected in a narrow victory against Speaker of Parliament Evaristo Carvalho.

As no presidential candidate received a majority of the vote, a second round was originally scheduled to be held on 8 August 2021. However, following an objection to the first-round result, the second round was postponed to 29 August 2021, and later postponed again to 5 September 2021.
